I don't think Dempsey was 50. He said he would enjoy sparring until he was 50.

I would guess this was probably filmed when Dempsey was in his late 30's or possibly early 40's.

    Dempsey turned 50 in 1945.

    Great finding, Mcvey.

I've never heard about that earlier.

    The quality is pretty good.

    Jack doesn't look his age.

Shmeling looks like a younger brother of Dempsey. They actually have very similar look.

Listen again he says," there's nothing I like better than the fight game I'll always get a kick out of it and I'm 50 years old"

My ears are certainly old enough to screw up, but I think he said "I'll always get a kick out of it IF I'm 50 years old."

But, like I said, those are old ears I'm relying on.

And to the point, Dempsey looks 40, not 50, and how and where would he and Schmeling have gotten together in 1945 when Dempsey turned 50. Also, Schmeling looks to be in his prime.

I don't think Schmeling was in New Jersey (as the film states) in 1945 and it is kind of hard to imagine anyone staging a charity fight using Schmeling in that year even if he was in the US, which I don't think he was.

This would make this circa 1945.

That voice... It's always a bit shocking to hear because it is never what one imagined as a kid reading about Dempsey.

For what it's worth, the site says the video was created in 1933, so he's 38 or so if that is true.

This is definitely not 1945. This was taken at Lake Swananoa which is right off route 15 on cozy lake road in Jefferson/Milton NJ. My wife grew up 2-3 mikes from here and I grew up over Sparta mountain in Sparta NJ say 6 miles away. Lake Swananoa was Schmeling training camp for his fight with Baer and others during his prime. My dad lived near Scranton PA and hitchhiked all the way to Schmelings training camp to watch his fave fighter train to fight Baer. When he arrived he found that training was called off. He approached Schmelings manager and asked if he could meet Schmeling. The response? "Who the hell are you to think you could meet Max Schmeling!" My Dad turned around and hitchhiked back to Scranton (no short distance!). As he walked by the lake to get to Rt 15 he saw Max sitting by the lake fishing. He was so pissed at what Max manager had said to him he did not want to walk down to meet Schmeling. Instead he rooted for Baer and was delighted when Schmeling was stopped.

This happened before the Baer-Schmeling fight I believe.

As someone noted, Dempsey was 50 in 1945-'46.
Schmeling was probably in Germany at the time, moping around with the rest of them.

I noticed that January 1, 1933 date, but the "created" part obscured for me if they were referring to this particular film or the creation of Paramount Pathe Newsreels. Certainly, though, 1932 or 1933 is most likely.

I think 1945 is downright impossible as I don't think the German Schmeling would even have been allowed into the country in that year.

    June 3, 1933.
GERMAN RESTS, FOE WORKS HARD LAKE SWANNANOA. N. J.. June 3 Nearing the end of the long training campaign and satisfied his physical condition is close to perfect, Max Schmeling rested yesterday In his log cabin on the lake front. He meets Max Baer in a 15-round bout In the Yankee Stadium next Thursday night The former champion walked about four miles up and down the lawn In front of his camp during the morning, played a single set of tennis in the afternoon and then went fishing.

Could this have been the day my Dad visited Schmelings camp?

The audio is skewed to a higher pitch.

It has been often noted that he had a high, almost feminine, voice. Herr Max's voice offers a good context to this on the video.
