Radrook, who do you pick in a fight between the two, Norton V weaver? I reckon it could be a mini classic.
Intesting potential fight. Norton & Weaver actually are closely connected, besides both being Marines. Marines Weaver was a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1971, and went to Vietnam. During this time he started amateur boxing and training, and notably fought Duane Bobick, a future Navy amateur star. In a fight where both men were down, Weaver was outpointed. Professional career Early years By 1972 Weaver was living and training in California, and took up professional boxing. In his early career, Weaver was considered a journeyman opponent. He was frequently brought in on short notice and overmatched against more experienced and developed contenders, and used as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton, who famously nicknamed him "Hercules" due to his top developed muscle definition.
That's a difficult to determine since both men had aggressive styles and certain unpredictable factors are involved. The slight difference seems to be that Norton was more cautious in his aggression. So maybe that caution would give Norton slight edge by scoring and evading counters. On the other hand it might provide Weaver with the momentum or aggressive initiative needed to swamp Norton under a steady barrage in which Norton eventually gets caught. So the fight can go either way. IMHO. BTW Í remember Weaver as holding the WBA HW world title belt in conjunction with Larry Holmes reign as champ for a while. Won it from John Tate in 1980. Also won the vacant NBA HW title in 1990 against Bill Corrigan.
In a strange way, despite how successful Norton was, and how brilliantly he performed vs Ali, I think he was a very intelligent man, and was held back in certain ways by his intelligence. I think he was innately honest with himself as well, and that stymied him, it held him back in my opinion, when facing a big puncher...especially in the case of Foreman, and in a lesser sense, Shavers and Cooney.
I think Norton would have been better suited with the ring name "The Black Adonis"..and let Weaver have the "Hercules" moniker, after all, he dubbed Mike that name.
Loved norton's offense. Whenever he stunned his opponent to the head, quick as a trigger he would rip body shots to the mid section. Practiced it so much it was natural reflex. Liked him as a person too, however I do believe his resume is overrated.
