In a hypothetical matchup of prime version Shannon Briggs (late 90s/early 2000s version) fought Wilder, who would win?

It would be a fight of two guys with big power, that's for sure.

Prime Briggs had a phenomenal set of whiskers, to the point I'm confident they've been harmful to his long term health. He would be able to sponge Wilder's best shots for at least the first half of the fight unless the referee steps in. They're both quite sloppy, both have power but only one of them has the chin to hold up to the other's bombs. Briggs by stoppage.

Briggs only has 1 decent win in 24 years.

    That is Liakhovich.*

His 2nd best win is a 47 year old Mercer.

This match is much more of a toss up than most here think it is.

*And then Liakhovich got his head jabbed off by Valuev.

It's hard to compare resumes of two fighters from different generations, especially when they're both quite mediocre. That's why I made the H2H comparison about them both having power and both making mistakes but only one having a proven chin.

    Since Wilder has no defence
    and
Since Briggs has Saddam Hussein's bunker for a chin
    and
    Since Briggs has huge power

    this means

    :outtahere:

Wilder's elite management team dodges Briggs and hires Homer Simpson as his 50th voluntary :SimpHomer:

Didn't you ever see that Simpsons episode? Wilder injures/gasses himself beating out of Homer and retires in his corner at the end of round 8.

Was that the one where they discover Homer has a layer of fluid around his brain protecting him from shock?

If the same briggs that gave Lewis hell for the very first round shows up for Wilder it's goodbye to Wilder, and being Wilder is no lewis, Briggs'll probably be good for another few rounds like that. Wilder seems to need at least 4 to 5 rounds to adapt to tomato cans let alone a legit contender.

Surely Briggs can't hit Wilder harder than the Washington jab that had him reeling across the ring? Surely not?

For Wilder even the current Briggs is prime Briggs.
