Did you think the fight was going to end in 90 Seconds? Did you think the fight was going to be competitive? Did anyone think Spinks was going to win? Your Thoughts
Tyson seemed like a monster back then I couldn't imagine anyone beating him .Spinks was known as a excellent boxer with great skill but most people thought that Tyson would beat him just not as quick as he did .Tyson appeared almost super human I had his greatest hits on video he looked awesome but having watched most of his fights alot of them were harder than I thought at the time.I think Spinks froze on the night if he could of got going he may of given Mike a hard night.
The remarkable thing is not that Tyson beat him, but how he beat him. Even the people who picked Tyson, seem to have expected a competitive fight for the most part.
I thought it would take one or two rounds to be honest. Spinks just never seemed confident about this fight.
A lot of people at the time believed spinks could at least extend him. Jersey Joe and Ali picked spinks to win. I expected a tough fight, I bought in to it, spinks was the ring magazine lineal champion at the time and they had to defend their decision, when most people could only see Tyson as the champion. It had to happen to finally clear up all loose ends. And Tyson doing what he did, was a perfect punctuation mark on his career at that time. 88 was the year of Mike Tyson and he was never bigger and nor would ever be again.
I knew it was going to be a short night. Spinks just didn't have the size or power to keep Tyson off of him. I wasn't at all surprised by it ending so soon.
I though Spinks was going to lose but believed that he had the technical skill to avoid being knocked out in the first round. In fact, I think that he panicked and just decided to make it a quick one by risking it all in an exchange.. BTW Their weight difference wasn't that great.
I thought it would be competitive until Tyson landed solidly. The landed solidly part occurred quicker than anticipated. I had paid $60 for both my wife and I to see the bout at a local club. Luckily the broadcast failed at that location so we received our $ back. I learned of the outcome while they were working to obtain a signal......someone from their car listening on radio yelled it was over in 90 seconds.
Seeing as I was only a year old at the time, I didn't think anything going into the Tyson/Spinks fight. But later on, from what I understand, no one expected a blowout. True, some expected Tyson to win and others expected Spinks. No one expected a blowout from what I understand. It seems to me that the impressive thing was how Tyson beat Spinks. Check out Larry Holmes and Sugar Ray Leonards predictions This content is protected Jake Lamotta, Billy Conn and George Foreman were among those picking Mike Tyson to win. Muhammad Ali, Rocky Graziano and Archie Moore were among those picking Spinks to outbox Mike Tyson, which in theory, Spinks could do. It just didn't happen in practice . And lets be honest, if this were June 26, 1988 and the internet and this forum existed at the time, many of you would predict a Michael Spinks win. Few thought it would be so one-sided. I watched it at Charels Town Raceway on Closed Circuit. I remember we got there early and were near the front row. Then, suddenly it was over and it took forever to get out of there as now we were among the last to be able to exit the grounds.
Neither was their height for that matter, I've seen M Spinks listed as 6'2 and 6'3, I think he was about 6'1, 6"1 and a half tops.
