I don't know anything about Steve Hamas except that he fought Max Schmeling, and will refer back to this thread to see if I can learn anything more about him. But I do know this, Fres Oquendo could fight, make no mistake! This man's autobiography would be titled '**** the Judges!!!' (Christian Mijares and Emmanuel Augustus would cowrite the preface). He could very easily have wins over Chris Byrd, James Toney, Evander Holyfield, and Oliver McCall. His style was awkward and he hurt himself by tending toward passivity but damn, nobody outclassed him as far as I can remember.
Just read up on Hamas. It says on boxrec that he spoke 5 languages: English, Polish, Russian, Slavic, and Profane (lol) As someone who speaks two languages and is working on #3, I'm impressed, especially given how he made his livelihood.
Good God another stupid thread where somebody is putting a 180 pound cruiserweight vs a 220 pound heavyweight.
Fought about half of his fights at or above 190 but fair enough, I'll count that as a vote for Oquendo.
Is 190 pound considered heavyweight by modern standards? It is considered cruiserweight. So Steve was a cruiserweight who basically fought cruiserweights and smaller. We are comparing him to a guy who was always a heavyweight and always fought modern sized heavyweights. This is the same as dumb Marciano fans who keep comparing a 180 pound fighter who fought guys that size or smaller against modern size heavyweights who fought against modern size heavyweights.
Hamas did surprisingly well against the boxers,Ramage,Loughran etc but they were undersized compared to Frez .Oqueno by decision.
