Don't you think his safety first approach in fights where he was overmatched counts towards this? Don't get me wrong, it's still an insanely great feat. Wasn't the Louis knockdown the only time Galento his the canvas? That's also very impressive given his safety last style.
I sort of agree, and for all that he accomplished what Tua never could. Tua's win over Rahman is more tainted than Galento's win over Nova by the way. Tua used illegal tactics to turn round a fight that he was losing, while Galento used illegal tactics to gain advantage in a fight that he was winning anyway!
Being Italian does. Everyone knows that Italian fighters are the greatest on the planet. Carnera, Marciano, Benvenuti, Galento, were all undefeated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tua beat Ruiz, Moorer, Maskaev, and Rahman Moorer - 24 years old. Unimpressive. He had 6 fights in the last 5 years (no wins over anyone worth a ****), one of which was a stoppage loss against Holyfield. Ruiz - Went 1-1-1 with a shot Holyfield. Maskaev - Got knocked out in all 7 losses. Need I say more? Rahman - Rahman was winning the fight (almost every rd) but was hit with a left hook after the bell. The only win even remotely plausible is maybe Ruiz but how highly are you willing to rate Ruiz in order to boost Tua's rating.
What did Galento accomplish thumbing Nova all night that's it! Galento was a dirty SOB in lots of fights let's not pretend the Nova one was an isolated incident. You don't think Tua had the capability to drop Louis too?
Not really, I think his terrific chin is 99% the reason. Aside from the Lewis fight ,how many times did he exhibit a safety first strategy ? Galento quit before Max Baer could ko him. This content is protected
Galento was stopped by Neal Clisby who, 4 months later was ko'd by Carnera! David Izon and Fres Oquendo both comfortably outbox Galento. Galento was ranked for 2 years in a sh*t era. Tua was ranked for 8 years in a very strong era! Name one aspect of his game in which Galento was superior to Tua?
No he certainly didn't ,he tended to lunge throw a left swing and follow it with his head then fall into a clinch. He never threw a series of punches, too uncoordinated and slow afoot. He was a tough MF with a big hook and an excellent chin and that's all he had and he often missed his punches by several feet!.Tua was on his opponents from the get go with short heavy hooks from both hands.
But it wasn't just a case of thumbing Nova all night. Galento was winning the fight anyway. He really seems to have upped his game for this fight.
Most criticaly in that he manage to up his game in the crucial fights of his career, while Tua always under performed in the crucial fights of his career. It probably came down to mind set at the end of the day. Galento was absolutely do or die in all his fights, while Tua could be discouraged, and frustrated. sometimes a less talented fighter surpasses a more talented fighter, and this is such a case.
