Patterson hung with Ali for 12/15 rds in the Title Fight with a bad back, and 7/12 rounds in the later Non-title fight.

Patterson was 3" shorter, with a 9" reach disadvantage, plus 7 years older.

But let's say 1960 version Patterson connects on Ali's jaw with his "Ingo Left Hook"...the one that left Ingo in the twilight zone with his leg twitching.

Could Patterson have possibly won an Ali fight??

It is possible i guess, as per Henry Coopers 'enerys ammer' episode that possibly only by luck and some quick thinking by Dundee, was the day saved.

It's possible. But the key word would be IF. Patterson could land it on Ingo, Ali is a completely different story.

That left hook was wicked. All time great left hook that was and it was on the level of heavyweight punchers too. Not just 180-190 lb heavies. Floyd is a vastly underrated puncher.

He could put Ali down with that hook. However Ali would get up.

That left hook would knock out any fighter. Ali had a great chin but when you get hit that clean, your gonna go. Patterson could punch. When he had you hurt, he really put everything into his punches and his record tells you he had KO power. Ali had a great chin and one could say that he got hit just as hard by Frazier, went down and got up. That is a fair argument. Personally, I think the punch Patterson hit Ingo with had more behind it than Fraziers' against Ali.

it depends on how much fat each one carried. Observe -

If Ali put on 100 lbs of fat by eating loads of pies for a fortnight, then Patterson landing on alis chin flush would just tickle ali.

BUT if Patterson put on 100lbs of pure fat by eating loads of pies, then his hook would easily ko ali.

P.S. This only counts if you are a prescriber to the thought pattern that extra fat blubber improves your boxing skills.
For the rest of us, its been blatantly obvious that a hook landing flush on a jaw thrown by anyone, correctly, will knock down someone else regardless of their or your relative fatness or size.

Ali was always open to the left hook....the one Patterson threw in 1960 was one hell of a shot!!!

Ali was never going to let Floyd nail him with his left hook. He did on a few occasions, but only slightly. I
f Patterson had landed the Ingo left on Ali, he's in deep trouble. With time left in a round he could/would have stopped Ali/Clay. But it wasn't to be. I've said this before, but Devil Green butted Floyd, opening that gash over Patterson's eye in Sept. 70 (old warrior's wounds heal slowly). That's what caused Ali to bust up Patterson's eye in his last fight. IMO Patterson (in 72) would have went the 12 round distance with Ali, giving it his all, and lost a not so one-sided UD had it not been for Green's head-butting/rubbing c r a p! One thing to remember; at the time of the stoppage, Ali-Patterson was basically even at the time, p I s s on Muhammad's clowning, he was getting tagged and losing rounds. My $0.02 RIP Floyd, you are an ATG champion with the fastest hands I've ever seen (wish we could have seen more of them)

Good analysis^. Floyd fell into an uphill battle in the 60's with a prime Liston & Ali; the Ellis title fight robbery, and Joe Frazier blocking the path in the late 60's.

If he could put Ali down then he sure as hell should be able to put Liston down yet most would find it laughable to even consider Patterson been able to even drop Liston let alone beat him.

Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper, Joe Frazier...all found that "sweet spot" on Ali's jaw. Liston, however, is a man of mystery....to which no answer will ever be really determined.

So Liston had a better chin than Ali?

There's a lot more to a knockout than punching power.

You're saying Patterson hit hard enough to knock down Ali. I'm just asking do you think he hits enough to knock down Liston as well?
