They got to stand over Dempsey too,or they would have if they could have put him there long enough to do so.

If he does, then Dempsey must be afforded the same privilege.

I'm not besmirching Dempsey's greatness here. He played by the rules he was given. But to label him a great finisher (which he was) and compare those abilities to later fighters, we must understand that he had certain advantages in finishing that later fighters did not.

Curious as to what it would take for me to write to get agreement from our friend Janitor. A complete and thorough apostasy?

It will probably happen when you least expect it.

Seems like a very fair, logical point.

The thing with rules based cross era arguments, is that you cant take something away from a fighter without giving something back, and vice versa.

For example if you downgrade a fighters power because of the smaller gloves, you have to correspondingly upgrade their chin.

You are entitled to your opinions, and I agree with the majority of them!

Better recovery ability but not better chin imo. I doubt Marciano would go down against Firpo and Tunney, or be hurt by Sharkey. Regardless of age.

Dempsey's short punches and rough inside fighting is a big reason I choose him.

I get the idea that Marciano absorbed a flush shot slightly better, but that Dempsey might have offset this with his recuperative abilities.

Smaller gloves, maybe? What do you think?

Probably circumstances. I mean, Marciano went down against two very good punchers. I can't say the same for Dempsey. Dempsey did show miraculous recovery ability. Best I've ever seen.

Firpo although crude was a Herculean puncher with his right hand. Most would say he hit harder than either Moore or Walcott. Tunneys power is not considered today and certainly he lacked the one punch wallop of Dempsey. However one of Tunneys trainers lived into the 1960's and he stated that in his prime Tunneys "right hand was as feared as Listons".

Hard one to call, but I think Dempseys dynamic attack wins the fight early.

If Dempsey only had the head movement I'd pick Marciano. But the head movement along with the lateral mobility is what I think will be a crucial factor to Dempsey landing his attack more effectively without bobbing and weaving into Rockys clubbing blows.

Would probably be one of the best matches ever imo. Perhaps like Hagler vs Hearns, but a more destructive version. If it goes past the 5th, it's Rockys. But if I had to bet, I don't think it would.

Marciano was dropped by Moore and Walcott I'd say Firpo hit as hard as either.

Tunney dropped an exhausted 32 years old Dempsey who got up straight away and resumed the chase.
Dempsey was past his best by then.

"Dempsey was floored in the eighth round with a right. He immediately got up."

Marciano was hurt by Ted Lowry to the point of being on the verge of a knockout.

"It was Lowry, not Marciano, who was on the verge of scoring an early knockout, stinging Marciano with two terrific rights in the first round and then rocking him with two mighty uppercuts in the second. By the fourth, a staggered Marciano seemed just one punch away from being knocked out."

Marciano was hurt by Bernie Reynolds.

"Marciano hurt Reynolds with a terrific right uppercut to the chin in the second, but the Connecticut fighter jolted Rock with a heavy right hand to the jaw as they banged away"
Marciano was hurt by Carmine Vingo.
"Vingo was down for a count of nine in the first round from two left hooks. Marciano put him down for another nine count in round two, but Vingo fought back furiously and hurt Marciano with solid rights."

Marciano depended heavily on his marvellous condition,[no man entered ring in better shape], to enable him to weather the punishment and sustain his incessant assaults.
He was also fortunate that he was facing older past prime men in his 6 most important fights.
    Louis
    Charles x2
    Walcott x2
    Moore

How he would fare if he was past his prime, having had 3 years of inactivity and a Hollywood life style is problematical.
It would have been interesting if Dempsey had been Italian,if he had been I feel some here would vote for a draw!lol
