Former LHW world champion Sergey Kovalev considers retirement as an option. 'I don't know what I'm going to do. I'll return to the USA in September and I'll start serious training, but I have no plans about my future in boxing. Maybe I'll retire' - said Kovalev to RSport.ru I hope Kovalev desides to continue his pro career, he's not old, he's still an elite boxer, and the only thing that he needs is proper motivation
I don't blame him. He got screwed over in both Ward fights, so I'm sure he's a little bitter. He probably needs one or two more big paydays to comfortably retire though.
It's sad that two competitive fights with Ward couldn't get him the career paydays he deserved. In hindsight, he'd have been better off going to PBC and making similar money bashing shrimp farmers. That's the call I'd make in his shoes, dude's been underpaid his entire career.
Not as easy to get up in the morning when you were the unified champion who went on to lose twice against the other guy who is the best. Nothing he achieves would be as great as what he's already achieved. Also, what if he does pull off a great performance again against the next great fighter, will he be rewarded with the decision? Where do you go from there? He can move up but I think he realises he has no chance up against the Cruiserweights. There are some very fun domestic fights to be made in Bivol and Beterbiev, but if Kovalev doesn't have the hunger then what's the point?
People are nailing this on the head. If the fire isn't there then he's going to get smacked up. If I were his adviser I would tell him: "You got screwed over against Ward, OK, fine. You don't feel like carrying on boxing because, what's the point? Fair enough. But, how are your finances? What are you going to do for the rest of your life? Your goals should be simple. Get a couple of big paydays and call it quits. Here's the plan: fight 2 bums in quick succession to get back on the horse. Then chase a mando spot against Stevenson who you can 100% beat. Fight a couple more guys to become mandatory. Force him to fight you. Then maybe two more fights as champ and retire. That's 7 fights. Not too bad."
Kovalev was always one dimensional even the Hopkins fight proved that he was nothing special he couldn't even get a 51 year old shot Hopkins out of there..........
You gonna turn on GGG like a rat fink too if he loses to Canelo. Jesus ****ing Christ! If you think a guy that outboxed Hopkins and Ward is one dimensional, log the **** off.
I've called it here already. Kovalev is done. Like many athletes at certain point of their 30s, Kovalev dropped off physically. His stamina is shot and unsustainable beyond 5th round. His aging started to show way back in Chilemba fight. Couple this with the robbery plus the low blow KO and you're ****ed mentally. Hence the retirement hints.
