Austin Trout has sued the WBO for $40 million, based on claims that the sanctioning body violated the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Law.

The lawsuit, originally filed by Trout in the State Court of New Mexico, was amended by the plaintiff and transferred to San Juan at the request of the WBO itself. The case will be dealt with by federal judge Pedro Delgado.

The basis of the case, is that the WBO removed Trout from their junior middleweight rankings without any justification.

    It's been:

    1) over a year since he last fought
    2) which was a loss

Guessing the WBO won't have too much difficulty beating this.

Trout's action is specific to things that occurred in 2014/15.

Top Rank will have zero world champions now that the WBO has been delegitimized

Here is a bit of a summary:

After losing to Lara in 2014, Trout asked to enter the WBO's rankings and received the #9 ranking.

Following that Trout defeated Dawson, Gradeja, Galarza and Hernandez, and according to the legal papers, this allowed Trout to climb to #4.

At this time Demetrius Andrade was the WBO titleholder.

The two top rated contenders - Canello and Cotto - fought for the vacant WBC title in Nov 2015, and #3 ranked Michael Soro was unable to fight due to contractual problems with his promoter. This left Trout ideally positioned for a title shot.

Trout claims he was then removed from the WBO rankings without just cause and replaced by Liam Smith, who eventually won the vacant WBO world title.

The WBO of course have their own version of events.

Sounds like he may have a case. WBO and other sanctioning bodies have been known to do things not by the book.

Has the WBO given their version of events? If they replaced him for no reason with Liam Smith, then he could have a case. This would have robbed him of a 2nd fight with Canelo and possibly future earnings from the additional expsoure that comes with it.

Canelo lost a lawsuit to his old promoter last year. But how long did that take to go through? Chances are Trout is doing this to push the WBO into settling by ranking him high enough for a title shot.

According to WBO President Paco Valcarcel :

"When it appeared that our title would become vacant, Trout had signed on to face Joey Hernandez (in Sept 2015)."

"And when Trout signed to fight Hernandez, he could not fight with Liam Smith for the vacant belt".

"Both Trout and Smith were removed from the rankings but Trout never requested that he be restored, which is his right to do so. Smith did request to be restored, and by our regulation we matched Smith against the next champion of the division, that was the champion of the NABO".

"Trout was simply committed to fighting with Joey Hernandez when the opportunity arose to fight for the vacant belt."

Why is Trout dredging up something that happened in 2014/15?

I hope he has a no win/no fee lawyer, because this is an expensive case....

Surely his management is more at fault for the fact his career has stalled in recent years?

The WBO will be looking to resolve things out of court and I agree, ranking Trout high enough for a title shot is a likely resolution.

Lucas Browne recently succeeded in bullying the WBA by threatening legal action.
