In his prime, though a welterweight, he routinely fought and beat middleweights. Could Robinson at 147 pounds deal with a modern day middleweight power puncher in GGG?

    Yes

Sugar Ray even as a Welterweight had so many tools, including the height, speed, ring IQ and mobility to offset a good middleweight. GGG is very good but I think Robinson also hit hard enough to hurt him.

I am waiting to see how GGG performs against Canelo before judging a SRR v GGG match.

I don't think even SRR could give away 13lb and hang with Golovkin at 160. It's simply unfair to Robinson; he'd have to stick and move all night against one of the best cutters of the ring and body punchers in modern boxing. Tall ask.

I would think Ray's speed would be the great equalizer here. GGG could do damage dont get me wrong, because Lamotta had him down 2x. But out of 6 fights.

Well then we're really comparing Golovkin with LaMotta.

LaMotta had a 28% KO ratio. GGG has 89% KO's.
LaMotta had 19 losses. GGG has 0 losses.
LaMotta was stopped 4 times. GGG has never been off his feet.

Golovkin has 5cm in height and 8cm in reach over LaMotta.

But, let's set aside these "paper advantages".

Golovkin's best attribute against a clever boxer is the ability to close off the ring and starve the other guy of space. His opponents have said over and over that the biggest problem with Golovkin is that he makes you work all the time and that he dictates the range that the exchanges take place at. In other words, he is going to be able to bring his size and power advantages to bear better than LaMotta could, and he has an elite jab to go with that. And, oh yeah, he likes to work the body of the movers, and a lot of his KO's start with his vicious bodywork.

I just don't see a little guy taking the sort of abuse that Golovkin would dish out over the course of a fight, no matter how superlative his skills.

I'm not so sure the technical things Golovkin brings to the table is anything Robinson wouldn't have seen before.
With his footwork, speed, all round skill, toughness and ring savvy Sugar Ray would certainly be setting GGG problems he hadn't seen before, and there's also the little matter of Robinson's power which despite his great chin Golovkin would be silly to disregard.
However like's been said giving away something like 13 pounds to a relentless power hitter like Golovkin may be too much even for the great Sugar Ray and I think GGG eke's out a hard fought UD or possibly a late stoppage, Robinson winning though wouldn't be any great surprise to me.
