I think it's even in skill .. Toney for Offensive, Floyd for defense
And I'm going to be the lone voice here for Toney in Legacy .. He fought better guys. We got to see him fight RJJ and Evander and so many others. I just don't think floyds fights are going to be remembered as much as people think. Floyds biggest fight easily in his entire career was Pac Man in 2009/10 and for whatever reason that fight didn't happen... I will always take the fighter, for the most part, who will fight anyone anytime anywhere opposed to the fighter who will not and is more concerned about his marketability and protecting that no loss .. From a pure boxing ATG standpoint it just doesn't impress me ...

That is actually a good point.

I feel like in the future, Floyds resume will meet a similar scrutiny that Marcianos receives.

I'll say Floyd on both but it's close on both.

If Toney gets credit for moving up so many weight classes does Floyd get credit for coming out with his marbles intact? He may be functionally illiterate but he's nonetheless clearly well above average intelligence.

While I wouldn't necessarily call Toney dumb, when I listen to him speak (even in his prime) it's a kind of jumble of "Sunnamofo bessnodbee tokkinno smackalldatam cannobuddy saydat weeainbee lissenen wutchootrinsayso weegone finowt wennatamcum..."

 

Floyd on both counts, and it's not even close.

Toney has fantastic boxing skills, but PBF is in a league of his own. His adaptability is second to none: counter punching (Corrales), high-guard pressure style (Judah), pot shotting (De la Hoya), and a combinations of those (i.e. Canelo, Maidana, etc).

In terms of skills Floyd. However a * against Toney. Had he more
dedicated with training and dietary habits his skills would have
surpassed Floyd.

Toney had way bigger b*lls 5'9 former middle fighting guys like Sam peter, Hasim Rahman, Holyfield etc.

That said he training and condition is big part of sport and Mayweather was always dedicated. He's never lose to Tiberi (Toney should of) or have as many close calls as James with numerous SD wins and draws.

I don't think James is an all time great. Mayweather to me is barely that. He handpicked his way to favorable situations before the fights

Floyd certainly had the much faster feet but James had some very subtle, very educated footwork. He is a pocket fighter much like Joe Louis was.
