You can argue back and forth on when a boxer is prime.



A boxer is elite when he is in the top five or so of his division.

If the division is rich in talent, the elite pool could reach down to the top ten.


In 2006, Hopkins was the Ring and linear champion at 175, clearly an elite LHW.

He ranked higher than the also elite, Antonio Tarver. He was in his 40's at the time.

He as also, at the time, ranked #5 in the pound for pound list, ahead of Barerra, Marquez, and the undefeated Ricky Hatton, all of whom were elite.

Of course he was elite.

Floyd had been off 2 years, didn't spar, didn't take Ariza into camp, and fought in 1st gear. It was, if looking at the fight rather than the event, a pretty poor sparring session.
Does Floyd still have it? Who knows, he didn't need to have it to beat McGregor, his Dad coulda done that. He gave McGregor a few rounds to make it look like a fight. But if Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi or any elite athlete didn't play for 2 years, then didn't do match specific training, they'd look seriously diminished. Likewise Floyd.

Even by this misinformed definition, BHop was elite in July of 2006, after beating Tarver to become linear champion at LHW. He was in his forties and had not lost to either of Calzaghe or Dawson.
