Yeah you hang on to that. Duran would have been in better shape and more fired up than the first fight. Anybody that saw Roberto s career could tell you that. Duran would have hurt Leonard. You Leonard fans wanted no truck with as Roberto having a chance for vengeance against your heights in early 1981.

Not to mention Duran Leonard 2 shouldn't have even taken place under those circumstances. Duran partying hard every night in NYC after the first fight, ballooning up to 200 lbs ( Very smart of srl knowing this and demanding the rematch ASAP ), AND Duran getting the 8-10 million up front before the fight? I believe the first time in history of boxing to get that type of money up front .. I just don't count that fight, lol, Where's the motivation for Duran to be focused and really care either? ..imo ...

Leonard fans love to make believe it's makes no difference. Salomon himself said when Roberto took his Robert off in the second fight, he could see Duran was not in the same shape as the first fight. After Canada, Duran's FURY was satiated and he never ever fought the ultaaggressive, untraviolent style again. He became a standup boxer~puncher. A waiter. With a chance to clear his name against Leonard, he would have been the Animal once more to exact his vengeance. Anybody with eyes that knows boxing sees how his style changed completely after Montreal. But for that one chance he would have summoned the beast once more. Too bad he didn't get it. THAT is my dream fight.

Don't forget about Hearns Leonard 3 .. Leonard didn't want that one either. SRL , the "peoples fighter", was a lucky man and happier than a pig in sh** to get that Draw after being on the canvas twice in that one, lol

Another fight I really looked forward to was Danny "Little Red Lopez vs. Wilfred Gomez. In late 78 through 79 that fight was HOT. Gomez was one of the 5 greatest fighters I ever saw when he was a super-bantamweight. "Little Red", along with Pipino, was the hardest puncher I ever saw. Gomez never missed a chance to castigate Danny when interviewed. At featherweight I think Danny survives some rough rounds against a featherweight Gomez, but prevails by an early lights out KO. Then they both fight Salvador Sanchez in 80 and 81 and get stopped.

I'm a big Duran fan. Watched all his bouts from 1970 onward live. Despised Leonard during his career but since recognize his greatness as a fighter. Saw all of SRL bouts live from the 76 Olympics till his final bout.

However after watching all three Duran Leonard bouts it's my opinion SRL fighting his fight beats the Duran after fight one. Duran was at his best as a lt weight not a welterweight. The quick boxing style of SRL a natural welterweight and Durans difficulty to impose himself physically would pose an issue for Duran. SRL W15.
