Not watched this one for a while, but last time I did I scored it a draw, 113-113. Six rounds apiece but obviously both guys had a point deducted. If I had to edge towards one guy? Probably Castillo by the smallest of margins, but it was a close one. I don’t object to guys who give it to Castillo, only the guys who claim he walked it and was flat out robbed. Mayweather winning in itself wasn’t the travesty: the travesty was the margins of the scores in his favour. What was it, four, five and five points across the three cards if my memory serves? Had it been a split decision, or a unanimous one but with only one point margins on the cards, then it wouldn’t have left such a sour taste in the mouth. A couple of points on the fight itself. It was the antithesis of your normal Mayweather twelve-rounder. Usually, if he loses rounds, he loses them early before adjusting, decoding his opponent and sweeping the late rounds. But here it was the complete opposite; I gave him all of the first five, but only one after that point. Castillo followed a pretty simple gameplan; pressured Mayweather every step of the way and kept moving to his left to negate Mayweather’s left hook, which he barely landed after the middle stages. But Floyd did have a bit of an off-night…Hey, even the best are entitled to them occasionally. His defence was generally pretty good but he never hit the groove offensively (of course, he blamed that on his shoulder injury, but who knows?). Castillo was also 9 lb heavier on the night, and he looked it. I think this fight made Mayweather realise that, if he was going to be successful above Super-Feather, he’d need to work on his physicality and strength a little, which he’s done very well since (in subsequent years he looked solid and strong even as high as 147 / 154.
Not quite, two had it by 3 pts. And Floyd won most of his rds clearly, from memory. "I never figured him out. I think he fought a more intelligent fight this time. I never felt I did anything this time." - Jose Luis Castillo Not really the words of someone who fought an even fight.
I will go as far as to say I give Floyd Mayweather more credit for the Castillo I fight then the Corrales fight. Sure Mayweather looked very technical in the Coralles fight. But Coralles it also looked like a Coralles off night. Like he could not make the weight anymore.
Seemed like a clear win for Castillo. Kind of like Duran vs. SRL... Sure it was competitive, but it was a clear Duran win none the less imo
No, Corrales continued at 130 and looked great against Manfredy a short time earlier. He just couldn't deal well with Mayweather's potshots.
114-112 Mayweather. I thought he took the first four quite clearly, along with 8, 10, and 11. 11 was very close and could go the other way, but then again, so could round 5, which I scored for Castillo. Either way, I think this is a case of Castillo controlling the narrative in the later rounds, but Mayweather landing the cleaner and more eye-catching stuff. Ultimately, those eye-catching shots, along with a strong start, allowed him to snag a close victory on my card at the end. Scores were ridiculously wide in favor of PBF, but I would hardly classify this as being a robbery or even all that bad of a decision, either.
