Why is Deontay Wilder not a mainstream heavyweight star like Mike Tyson was?

Exactly. He's a fraud, packing a glass jaw, who fights nothing but stiffs to protect that fragile mandible.

In addition to being sold well, Mike had insane charisma, ducked no one, and fought all the time. He was an instant legend, and gave the public high-light real KO's. The press and the public could not get enough of him.

It was exactly as Cus D'Amato had intended. In order to be a success in boxing it is not enough to win. You must win in exciting fashion.

Klits cleaned out the US scene and the interest. It's weird though, they should be behind Deonkey given he is their champ for a few years now.

Its an interesting point he makes though, as do the casual market really know or care about a the value of a fighters win and the true context of it in the division. I would doubt it I would think the fact he is knocking everyone out masks over that enough for a casual market to get behind.

I just think he has been poorly marketed and he doesn't have a very likable persona... That and boxing in the states isnt what it was in the 90's.

Plus no one had twitter in the 90's.

I imagine half of the stars in the 90's wouldnt been as liked as there were if they were posting selfies or pictures of insignificant and rented wealth every two minutes.

Wilder would have done far better in terms of crowd pull had he won his victories in half the span of time. Instead he's peed his career away fighting what are mostly cans and making a meal of each one. Now he has a reputation as a fraud that's going to be hard to shake off.

If he matches up to AJ and beats him in convincing fashion, that could be his break-through point.

I don't think he can though.

Despite what Europeans like to say when they rag on American boxers there is more to it. Wilder has gone as far as you can go with that formula. To be Mike Tyson famous you also have to be legitimately sensational, clean the division out, beat the best fighters around, and become undisputed. Deontay hasn't done any of that. His form is weak even if his punches are strong. He hasn't fought any top guys, and he's just sitting on a belt while Joshua's been gathering them together. Joshua is on track to become Mike Tyson famous.

Washed up late 90s-early 2000s Tyson is a better and more entertaining fighter than he will ever be.... Wilder looks like a fool attacking the greats of the past while he feasts on bums and spews verbal diarrhea.

Tyson at least went through his bums in one round, not straggling behind on point before knocking them out in the late rounds.

He also fought once every third month, not once or twice a year.

We could also add that Tyson was named the baddest on the planet while Wilders contact with the planet is through his public media, which seems to be run by a teenager.

He's not a star like Tyson because he hasn't fought anyone decent and based on the C level fighters he has fought and struggled with, he's just not very good.

    Simple really.

While Tyson's era was not very good he at least was fighting the top 10 contenders in the division. Wilder isn't doing that. He has fought one top 10 opponent in almost 10 years as a pro. That is laughable.

It isn't because of his opponents. The general public doesn't know any better to consider a boxer's resume.

The answer is marketing, and exposure. Back the in the day, for decades... boxing was dominated for the most part by American fighters. There were many household names, they were all over the television, and being pushed and marketed into homes across the United States. After the 90's, there was a shift in the heavyweight division, where most of the top contenders and Champs were not from the United States, weren't household names, and even though they were talented, they didn't have the star power here in the US. So, they didn't get the media push. They were huge overseas, but not here in America.

So, still to this day, the major networks, news outlets, etc.. in the US haven't jumped behind Wilder to put him into the public eye. This just isn't the 90's anymore, where nearly the all of the Champs and top contenders were Americans, or at least fought in the United States on a regular basis.

Firstly, the U.S has lost interest in boxing over the years. Boxing was huge say 20 years ago but it isn't anywhere near as popular as the biggest U.S sports now.

Secondly, Wilder isn't very good, doesn't fight anyone good, and isn't fighting often enough. This means that people have lost interest in him beyond Alabama.
