No way, Joe`s slipping abilities were cat like and his gloves were well positioned the only punch that got through often was the counter straight right which is a problem for most southpaws let alone Joe who came forward attacking.

If Mathew Saad Muhammad had a good defense he would be regarded as the all time best light heavyweight.

His defence was great in the Foreman fight?
Covering up against the ropes taking some of the best body and head punches an all time great puncher ever threw was hardly the best display of defense Ali ever exhibited, it was however one of his best displays of innovation in a fight and of course one of his best results.

Little Red Lopez had an absolutely horrible defense. But luckily for him, incredible power.

Young Foreman was actually good defensively.

I'm going to go with a different sort of pick. Miguel Cotto. I just never found his brand of defense to be effective.

I absolutely love watching the career sets I have of Rafael "Bazooka" Limon. I actually have a Limon shirt still in good shape from many years ago. The guy was SOOOO exciting and his chin should be carved into Gibraltar. Definitely one of the 5~10 most exciting fighters I watch a lot.

Smokin' Joe Frazier might be at the top of the list as someone who achieved a lot with a poor defense.

EVERYONE hit Joe. He usually kept his gloves around chest level. He didn't cover up much.

Hell, early on, the Frazier-Stander fight was just two guys wailing on each other, until Stander's face fell apart.

Everyone talks about Joe's "bob and weave" ... but he got hit with about everything ... from anyone willing to throw back.

He was one of those guys who took two or three punches to land one. His one punch, more often then not, was usually better than their three and most just fell into a shell after a while.

But Frazier was pretty damn easy to hit, if you were willing to open up and let him hit you back.

Watch the fight more closely and you'll see Ali rolling with, avoiding or blocking a lot of Foreman's incoming. It may not have looked like it, but his D was on point that night. No way he lasts against Foreman if those shots he takes actually land clean.

Agreed. I thought he was vulnerable at certain weights, but it's been that way forever due to his leaky defence.
