Yeah, probably Spinks makes it the 2nd round lol..Seriously, I never knew he drained himself, I don't think its the reason he struggled with him so much still after hearing that, I just think Conn fought out of his skin, and the bigger man struggled to get to grips with him. This what I like about the classic board though. Genuine fight fans that are full of knowledge adding bits you've never heard.
Are you newbies serious? Do you know how much more highly skilled Louis was as compared to Bowe? Do you understand his pinpoint accuracy, tremendous hand speed, rapid fire multiple combination punching all this was deadly punching power? There was NOTHING Bowe did better than Joe Louis. There would be only one fight. No one would pay to see fight two and Bowe would not want the fight. Louis at his best kos Bowe within three rounds.
I do think a prime Bowe would at least be a worthy rival to Louis if Bowe was around then. I love Louis, but admit that Bowe would a combination of size AND skill for him to contend with. My question is how Louis chin holds up. Give him Holy's chin and I say Louiswins everytime.
There was one thing Louis did a lot better than Bowe and that was go down. No way does a light punching light heavy like Braddock put Bowe down and I'm no fan of Bowe's chin. No super middle like Conn rocks Bowe and thinks he can knock him out. I think you need to be more subjective. Joe could be decked. He could punch and could put punches together well but there were a lot of examples in his career of him being put down. Whether that was because he was weight drained, been playing too much golf or whatever reason is given, the fact is that Joe was knocked down ten times in his career. One of Bowe's biggest flaws was his poor footwork but that is less of an issue against Joe who was quite slow and methodical himself. Holyfield and Hide landed well on Bowe with their fleet of foot but Joe's shuffling style would have been far less of a problem for Bowe. Eddie Futch said Bowe had the tools to be the best heavy ever - I know that he was talking potential not achievement - and he also said 'I love Joe - but he did have that chin.' Given that, I doubt Eddie would have been 100% confident of Joe's chances and that should give us pause for thought.
What happened to Burt? He should be all over this. I was gone for a long while, but when I tried to contact him, noone answers.
I never trust the opinions of a fighters trainer or manager. I don't care how famous they are, their opinions are skewed. For instance, I liked E. Stewart a lot, but his opinions ALWAYS tended to make him and someone trained by him look great. Human nature. Same with Futch.
Good post. I swear, the way these guys talk about Louis you'd think he was some kind of flawless, unbeatable superhuman who knocked out every opponent in the first round and never had any problems in the ring.
The difference between what Futch said and what Steward used to say is that Futch was talking about what Bowe had the talent to become not what he was or had been. Emanuel did tend to big up Hearns, Lewis and Wlad based on what they had done, for which he had to be given a share of the credit. Futch wasn't bragging. If anything he was setting himself up for a fall because he was saying he had this great talent to work with so anything less than a stellar career for Bowe might be perceived as a failure on his own part as the trainer.
Pure garbage. Louis was the most highly skilled hwt that ever lived.....and it's not close. Open your eyes. Bowe was a lazy fighter, hated to train and had a very limited skill set. Louis was very quick with his fists....trip hammer quick and he had one punch KO power in both fists. He threw these very powerful blows in bunches, perfectly thrown with incredible accuracy to body or head. Only the worst of posters, and a few are here within this thread, would think in their wildest imagination that Bowe could hang with the best Joe Louis. Louis was OBLITERATE Bowe. Do you people know anything about this sport?
Oh ffs. Bowe would be a dangerous opponent for anyone, period. He was 6'5, had 81" of reach 235+ and more importantly could actually fight a bit and had heart. 12 months after his legendary stoppage of Max Schmeling Joe was staggered and later dropped by Tony Galento who is about half the fighter Bowe is. This is prime Louis. Whilst this doesn't mean Bowe wins or should be favoured it should give pause to anyone thinking this is a stroll in the park for Joe and an automatic victory. There's every chance Bowe is better than anyone Louis ever beat. To nonchalantly and completely write Bowe off shows a lack of appreciation for the dynamics of boxing.
Why don't you take your condescending, arrogant , pompous attitude back to your garage and use that treadmill. How on earth you managed to get 996 likes god only knows.
