He fought the same guy before, floored him, and in many peoples' eyes won. No credit for passing that test?

If JDJ is to believed, Kova seems to be lazy and disinterested. With that approach, he would have a tough time beating any of the guys, who were hungry, on this list.

He got socked in the nuts and the referee called the fight off when he doubled over in pain. That's not quitting, that's a terrible call by the referee.

 

Now, that is fair criticism. Is it a blip in his career? Or has he had enough of boxing? If he doesn't have the fire, then he'd best quit for real before he gets messed up.

 

Watched both of them, twice.

He didn't fold under pressure. He gassed and then got hit in the nads. If Cotton had counted Bowe out after Golota had played ping pong with his nuts, would that be Bowe folding under pressure?

 

I'm not going to argue the point, but I will say this:

Kovalev is probably 20lb heavier on fight night and has an almost 80% KO ratio. I'd say he's got at least as much of a puncher's chance against Charles as Marshall did.

 

I think the point is that if you don't have the heart to fight from behind, how can you beat all these top 10 ATGs?

Duran is still feeling the bruises of "No Mas" till this day. The difference is he kept fighting, and proved himself successful in larger number of situations than Kovalev.

If Kovalev keeps fighting, and starts astonishing crowds by coming back from losing fights as an older boxer, then the story could change.

Those were legit body blows that made him crumble. He is nearly 35 years old and the first time he was hit and hurt he folded. Kovalev was not some young up and coming fighter. He is nearly at the end of his career and this was his chance to show greatness and he failed miserably.

You and Seamus were stating he would beat some of the hardest punching hwt champions. He folded via body blows from a relatively light hitting light hwt!

He looked ordinary against Ward.
Ward looks ordinary too.

I doubt they would beat Virgil Hill.

 

Makes one wonder how the tide of board opinion has turned on Sonny Liston, who I routinely see favored over top 10 HW ATG's despite giving up his belt with much less of a fight and in a much shorter timespan than Kovalev did.

 

Liston giving up his title sitting on his stool is a complete nono for a heavyweight champion. The heavyweight title was always treated as a special trophy and it's holders expected to conduct themselves to a high standard.
