i cant speak much for the chracters but they appear to be mostly returded, or under a spell that makes them returded.

I'm hoping that reading most of the Tolkien books and all of the Martin ones wont count against me, because I'd have a tough time denying that after displaying such insider knowledge.

Haven't read Neil Gaymon but I'll check it out at some point. I think the real deal about HP was that majority of the fans grew up with them. She released one book in every two years so young readers were pretty much the same age than the main characters of the books. The characters are already pretty relatable in themselves which enhances the whole thing. I actually thought that you need a child's mind to enjoy the books but last year I re-read the series after a very long time. I was surprised that there was more than nostalgic value to them, I couldn't stop reading them even though in the past I've read them over 10 times. Something about the way it's written makes you want to continue reading almost in every chapter even though 99.9 % of the story is told in teenage boy's point of view. It took me about 12 days to read all seven books and for me that's superhuman speed when talking about reading books.

this is it, if you grew up with it apparently the books grw with you too as rowling starts to "improve". Although judging by the penultimate movie (frekin hell) you'd think that book was written by a 8 year old.

I will cut her some slack, the last movie is actually alright. apart form the ridiculous jesus analogy and vomitmort not knowing his own whorecrux right in front of him how frekin dumb.

The massive draw for me with tolkien is his god-like grip of the english language in epic style. He must have slaved over his books for decades adjusting tiny words here and there before release, and thats given he had an oxford dons brain at work on it. Just reading a few lines feels like being in an epic.

Martins strength for me is his realistic characters, plus epic food descriptions -you only need to look at him to see hes done his research on that.

As regards Gaiman, well, his output can be varied but he has some outstanding ideas.

Personally Pratchett was the bizz when he was in full flow. Sucha clever guy despite not being university "educated".
