I know that guys like Spinks, Bruno and Holy trained with weights as far back as 30 years ago. Morrison must have done as well, and I would guess Lewis. Briggs also. I think Tyson started a bit with weights after prison. The Klits have been doing it all along, I think. Vinny Paz, definitely. The late 80's early 90's seemed a bit of a watershed moment to me. Not all started lifting, but quite a few did.
I think a lot of boxers lifted weights but most of the trainers didn't recommend it for boxers in general. It was frowned upon but it went on.
Yeah Lewis did. Lennox was pretty gangly in the Bruno fight, come later on in the 90's he really filled out and he carried it well when he didn't take an opponent lightly.
Yeah, it probably came more from the fitness coaches than the head coaches. Futch, Dundee, Steward and the likes were probably more skeptical.
Those have been around forever. I get the impression that the regular use of the smaller pads to work hand-eye coordination and reflexes is a bit more of a recent development.
Yeah, my understanding was always that this is the area where boxing trainers most clung to outdated conventional wisdom, and trailed behind other sports.
http://articles.latimes.com/2013/mar/23/health/la-he-five-questions-klitschko-20130323 What type of exercises do you engage in to maintain your boxing prowess? Is there any weightlifting? "There is no weightlifting because it doesn't help you go 12 rounds. The cardiovascular work makes your muscles smaller, but endurance goes up. All my muscles are working muscles, not to look good. You're not too massive, but it's effective." -Wlad Klitschko
What makes you come to the conclusion that his stamina was **** because of the absence of weight lifting?
It looks like he was splitting fire wood also. That might have some advantages over just hitting a tire with a sledge. To split the block you have to be accurate and it takes a real good swing to split hardwood especially in the summer, wood splits easier when it's frozen. A lot of swings you see guys doing on a tire are not with enough power to split wood.
Where did i say that? You picked a wrong example, wlad has bad stamina no matter what kind of special training... Being affraid to get hit doesn't help either.
When you said "Well obviously didn't work for him cause his stamina was always shi.t" in reply to me posting a quote that he doesn't do any weight lifting. If that wasn't what you were replying to then that's ok, I'm just confused at what you were saying didn't work for him then.
His approach to training for endurance and stamina and no weight lifting obviously didn't work as we have seen in his fights.
