He could in all honesty be dropped by that punch, but Ali's power s of recovery were amazing. He'd have gotten up, held on and tied Patterson up until his head was cleared. Then he'd have gone to war on Patterson!

That same left hook would have taken either one of them out, or anybody else, for that matter. The thing is, Patterson had just decked Ingo and had him in a "compromising position", let's say...and I think chances of Ali allowing that punch to land would be iffy, but hey, Cooper and Frazier both caught him, so it was possible.

Patterson was capable of generating tremendous power, despite his size differential,...and that's not just me talking as a fan. @jowcol

As usual, you are absolutely right. Patterson may have only weighed 190 in that Ingo fight but he had the shoulders neck and hands of a much bigger fighter. Patterson was a mild mannered type guy but he was deceptively strong, accurate and fully committed to his punches.

Who knows how it would have affected anyone else? It's an impossible ask. It's not just about the impact it has on a particular opponent. Ingo's chin isn't in the territory of blokes like Ali, Foreman, Vitali etc. It may not even knock some people down let alone out.

A guy like Ali shipped huge blows from the likes or Foreman, Frazier, Liston and more. There's no way in my mind anyone gets him out of a fight with a single punch.

If time stopped a couple of seconds after Holmes hit the deck against Shavers how many people would have thought he could get up from that punch, let alone come back to win?

There are so many factors involved.

With out a doubt cobra, Ali though did get up from coopers cracking left and Frazier s. But I've no doubt s that if connected on Ali it would have dropped him hard.

That was a perfect left hook. I think the results vs Ingo would have been the same even if Floyd had not previously dropped him. It was a stand alone, detonated bomb...worthy of being ranked along side the other great left hooks of history.

Greetings JackSilver. When was Liston ever knocked down? The Ali/Clay pitty-pat in their rematch that virtually everyone sees it for what it was. Leotis Martin? Sonny may have been 40 yrs. old by that time! With head demons to boot! IMO Liston took a better 'sunday shot' than Ali. Given their styles alone, Sonny took much more punishment in his career than Ali simply based on styles. His career shows him wading into sluggers taking big shots before "The Bear" located and destroyed! Banks? Cooper? Frazier? All dropped Ali with a left hook and NONE of the fighters mentioned hit Ali as hard as Floyd's Ingo shot. If Floyd lands the bomb CLEAN Muhammad's in deep doo-doo. My $0.02

Deep doo-doo...not to be confused with shallow doo-doo..that Teddy Atlas might describe
in his typical Atlas-ian way. Good comment.

Very good post. Which fight did Patterson have an injured back in vs Ali? Was it the first or the second?
