Disagree, he fought a very smart fight. Floyd made some adjustments, but oddly enough in some ways I kind of preferred the focused disciplined fighter Canelo was when he fought Floyd vs the ultra relaxed go with the flow fighter he was tonight vs G. I also thought Canelo was more disciplined vs Chavez than he was tonight vs G.
He wasn't clearly outpunched : He landed more power punches, way more body shots, and he landed the bigger more significant punches. Classic quality vs quantity. G threw a lot of jabs, but only a very small percentage of them landed flush. Most of them Canelo was slipping, blocking, partially blocking etc, many of which compubox was counting to no surprise.
He's not responsible for his fan base. Only for doing his job in the ring. He deserved the win tonight.
Hard to say, Canelo would fight a different fight, a more focused more disciplined fight if he fought Floyd again. Nobody's been able to whoop Canelo. Canelo was one of the only guys that Floyd couldn't whoop. If it were so easy for Floyd, then why didn't he give Canelo a rematch or fight him at 154? It just doesn't add up. Just compare how effectively Canelo feinted Floyd round after round, he didn't always take advantage of those feints, but that's still ring generalship. I can't remember if Canelo feinted G even once tonight. It was as if Canelo was just doing whatever he wanted in there vs G just to prove a point, whereas vs Floyd he really had a specific gameplan to confuse Floyd, which was working until Floyd started making adjustments, then it was back and forth. Whereas vs G it was back and forth in a different way, Canelo was just inviting G to walk him down. Both were close fights but two totally different styles and two totally different gameplans.
Keep in mind GGG is 35 and looks like he is slipping. The younger man in there decides to run around and did not want to exchange. I do not blame GGG. He is the older guy that cannot pull the trigger anymore. Shame on Canelo for being scared. He should not fight a middle weight if he doesn't have the physical tools to be in the middle weight division.
You guys are all about punch stats now. Canelo only has a credited 4 punch edge in Powershots. Golovkin was credited as landing 58 more jabs. Golovkin outlanded Canelo in 11 rounds Overall Golovkin landed more punches by a significant margin. Canelo was outpunched in every sense of the word. I would also say the punch stats weren't that accurate as usual, and Golovkin who threw 200 more punches than a man 8 years younger, also landed more than being credited here.
It's not that he's past it, but I agree he could've fought a better fight, with a more committed attack. He should've started earlier, and shouldn't have been so respectful of Canelo, as the smaller, unproven guy at middleweight. And when he did start to take control he shouldn't have let his foot off the gas for a second, and he should've thrown more to the body. Canelo was right there for him and he would let him walk away. Late he had so little reason to worry but he basically let Canelo stay in it. He could've stopped him with a better attack along with the pressure he was sure showing.
As much as I say GGG would have trouble with Jacobs and Canelo earlier in his career, I admit he does seem to have declined. Of course 35 is past a boxer's prime, and he's been boxing a long time. The snap and speed and responsiveness isn't quite what it was four years ago. But that's NOT why he lost rounds or didn't do as well as he could've. Canelo's skill and that he started lated and didn't commit to his attack better were the issues. Of course that's no 'excuse', I do think he deserved the decision.
Canelo ran every round. He would have spurts then spent 90 percent of the round on his bicycle. Come on triple OG is 35, he is old. He can't be stuffed chasing the young man around the ring at his age. Canelo stuck to his plan. But he didn't win. He lost and clearly. Adelaid is a disgrace and is a racist to come forward boxers.
