The Bodysnatcher also had a granite chin, as did the Marvelous one. We'll never know whose was the best of all time because fair, apples to apples testing is impossible, but there reaches a point where a granite chin is simply a granite chin. I don't think it's possible to take the shots GGG's taken in his career better than he has. Some may match it, but the room to react better just isn't there. It's good enough that I wouldn't give any 160 pounder* in history a better than 5% chance of stopping him, and that's the highest I'll rate anyone's chin. *even saying "160 pounder" is a bit of a misnomer- weigh-in rules changes means that most past middleweights were actually smaller men taking punches from other smaller men on fight night compared to modern middleweights. The capacity to play the rehydration game simply wasn't available to classic fighters to the extent it is for modern ones.
I think you're selling the guy's chin a bit short. Canelo being a former LMW is irrelevant. I've always maintained that GGG's chin was more important to his arsenal than his power. Canelo , while not having top drawer power, has one-shot KO capability when he lands flush. And he landed flush several times last night with no visible effect on Glolovkin. The claim of top 5 chins ever is a bit of over-the-top hyperbole perhaps, but he can only absorb the best shots that his available opponents can deliver. The dude has demonstrated an A-level chin so far.
I think describing it as "incredible" and "confirmed" but short of top five, is even-handed. It's also higher praise than "A-level".
' I wa referring to... "He got bashed about a bit by a former light-middle who can punch, but is not a devastating puncher." It seemed to understate what happened. And I was responding to the post I cited. If you said "incredible" somewhere else, that's fine.
GG looks to have a great chin, but your percentage is an exaggeration. Guys like Roy and Jackson would had to have been given more than a 5% chance.
It's impossible to hash out a "confirmed", objective top 5 list on chin. People just like ranking things. Way more than 5 fighters had granite chins, and GGG's in that club. Good luck separating them out.
Pre-50's I think. I said i wasn't aware of some fighters Mcgrain mentioned and some guy said I was a boxrec fan.
Not in my book... particularly when they'd know in their heart of hearts that GGG had a better chin than they did and enough power to crack their chins. Risks they took on other, less sturdy fighters probably wouldn't be taken vs Golovkin....lest the Hawk wanted a replay of the McCallum fight.
Roy would definitely have had more than a 5% chance. He had blazing speed and one punch knockout power. As great as GG is, he's easy enough to hit.
Hearns lost his power at 160lbs. He was destructive as hell under that weight but 160lbs there was no "thud" behind his shots anymore. His arms looked weak at MW, and the punches just looked like Callum Smith's last night. Hearns was without a doubt one of the best 154lbs boxers in history, he's not one of the best MW's in history, just as Joe Cal's not one of the best at LHW.
