As I predicted, it was all done mid last week and they were waiting for Canelo-Golovkin to be over.

Props to both men, this should be a cracker.

And yes I know, this doesn't completely make up for Wilder's terrible previous opponents at all before this, but hey, this is the best opponent he can get and he deserves credit for finally stepping up.

    May the best man win!

Picking Wilder by decision, I can see him running like Scott did.
Plus I don't trust Haymon and NYSAC.

Great news. This doesn't fully justify or rectify the standard of wilder's previous opponents but a win would undoubtedly consolidate either man as one of the top 2 in the division. God bless 2017.

Cool. Wilder's first credible opponent. Should be fun.

(PS - He does know Ortiz was bust for peds years ago, right? Not that it gets to a week to the fight and he 'finds out' and dumps Ortiz for an accountant :( )

I can't believe this. This is like Adonis Stevenson voluntarily fighting Beterbiev.

    Can't wait!

Good competitive fight. I think is is 55-45 in Wilder's favour. I expect Ortiz to outbox Wilder for the majority of the fight.

Sounds great. I expect Ortiz to stop Wilder if the fight ends up happening. Even though it has been made official I won't be putting too much belief into this happening unless there is a week or so before the bout and someone hasn't suddenly gotten injured, or Ortiz hasn't mysteriously tested positive for something.

I still don't think Wilder should get much credit for this. Fact is he's held the division back for 2 and a half years or so by choosing easy voluntary fights. If this fight does indeed happen and Wilder ends up losing then it confirms what he and his team evidently believed - that he would be beaten by a top opponent.

I'm not going to get too excited because there's plenty of time for pulls outs, injuries ect.

    Wilder 8/11

    Ortiz 11/10

Was planning on betting Ortiz before I seen the odds, thinking he would be a significant underdog. Having seen the stingy 11/10 I actually like Wilder now. 50/50 fight pretty much but you have to think Wilder will get the benefit of any doubts as he is younger and american. Really looking forward to this, you can't beat a big heavyweight showdown.

I'm no Deontay fan, but he does deserve some credit here. He paid Stiverne a step-a-side fee just so that he could get the better opponent. If he had wanted another easy fight he could've just fought Stiverne again - justifying it as an enforced mandatory.

You're right that it doesn't make up for all his garbage voluntaries. But it's a huge step in the right direction, and honestly the best thing he could do for boxing right now.

I take it this means Ortiz loses his WBA mando position, which in turn means AJ can fight who he wants after Pulev?
