I knew he would retire his heart just isn't in boxing anymore he's been like that for awhile. He's had a great career is a HOF boxer and an ATG at 168. Enjoy your retirement champ.

Damn would've like to have seen him fight on but wish him well in his retirement. He's a modern day legend of the sport and an ATG to me.

I don't like Ward and have never enjoyed watching him. Was hoping he'd take Stevenson's belt away from him though.

All the same, he's a fantastic fighter. ATG at 168, no doubt.

Where does Ward rank on the ATG SMW list? Top 10?

Yes would have been nice to have seen him fight Stevenson but with the whole Showtime HBO thing it would be hard to make.

Definitely. I would argue he's even top 5.

Same here, but I suspect Stevenson is just not interested. Ward's HBO contract is up too so I guess he could've made a one-off deal with Showtime.

Either Stevenson is not interested, or Ward does not feel like taking on a dangerous opponent without his heart being in it, or both.

I'm not going to wish him a happy retirement. I'm just here for Farm's and CS's comments.

Boxers always say that. I expect him to be back by 2019.

    Interesting points:

    1) Ward says the reason that his body is letting him down, which is why he wishes to retire. As I've always said, 175 Ward was clearly not as good as the Super 6 version. Age and inactivity do that to you. Thankfully for him, Kovalev wasn't at his best either, especially in the second fight.

    2) Given that Ward thought of fighting Buglioni/Johnson or even Bellew, it's clear that he was not averse to earning a little more money before retiring if a suitable opponent presented itself. The problem for him was that no suitable opponent was found, and that may have played a part in his decision to retire. Obviously Ward does not want to get in the ring with an elite contender without his heart being in it. Boxing is one of those sports that you really have to be 100% committed at the top level.

I didn't realize his contract was up with HBO. Yeah the fight might have been able to be made but Stevenson who's holding the lineal belt hostage probably wanted no parts of it.
