I personally don't like the man, and that stretches back well before the Kovalev match. I find him an unbearable, sanctimonious, fake, manipulative, petty, unpleasant, dull, arrogant piece of ****, and I found his in ring style repulsive to watch, and as effective as it may have been, it wasn't true Boxing, it was a rhythm breaking spoilerific style that was overly reliant on dirty tricks and cheating instead or pure counter puncher and skill, therefore marring what should have been his crowning achievements.
Maybe he felt himself slowing down during training and during the fight. Sometimes you just lose motivation. His health is intact and he's had a great career.
Its going to be good to see him actually lose weight after his retirement, after he come of his cycle.
Whether you like him or his fighting style (I don't particularly either), I consider him to be one of the great fighters of this year. I think he has retired at the right time, before somebody eventually got to him. He deserves to enjoy his retirement and congratulations for his career.
Was never a fan. But I believe in giving credit where it's due and not gloating when a fighter I dislike retires. Undefeated, HOF career, probably ATG. Mission accomplished indeed.
I'm actually in tears reading Mr.Ward's retirement statement, ffs. At work too, people are seeing tears in my eyes
Nah Ward will get his due he will get into the HOF and his run at 168 will be remembered even more as time goes on. Look at Calazaghe he wasn't really appreciated until years later after he retired and now he's HOF and is getting his due. Ward will be the same.
Possibly, but he'll probably be just as controversial in retirement as Joe is, public opinion will be 50/50 pro/con.
