    Define up to the task. I'd throw Kovalev a cinder block if he were drowning but he beat Ward clearly the first time IMO and the rematch was an absolute farce.

    If he keeps cruiserweight and AJ out of his mouth then good luck to him. Otherwise he's getting a very rude awakening.

    I respectfully disagree first fight could have gone either way and ward just took kovalevs soul in the rematch. Kovalev was supposed to end ward but failed miserably.

    It was a close one true but my issue was always the champion got the benefit of the doubt - you need to do more to take the belts than keep them and it seemed that the fight was to close for that too happen. Just looks like home cooking if it doesn't happen that way.

    The 2nd fight Kovalev lost that mentally before he even got into the ring... His issues going forwards is himself not his physical ability (well maybe stamina issues) and unless he sorts that out I can't see him performing any better if he doesn't get it all his own way...

    I agree he was beat before he got in the ring i made a thread about it. Ward got into his head for that fight.

    Well, hes retired now so these guys wont get their chance. I do find it just as funny that people are saying hes retiring to duck some guys. So he moves up in weight to face the feared Kovalev beats him in a tough close fight then right away gives the guy a rematch even though he couldve done the cowardly thing and just not given the rematch and taken the win but no. He fights him again and kos him. Does this sound like a man whos afraid of anyone? gimmie a fckn break!

    Bivol is the only one with the potential to beat Ward, but we don't even know if he'll reach to his full potential.

    SOB is very overrated. Kovalev beat him in the first fight, knocked him down, staggered him with his jab, clear win. Even Mayweather had Kovalev winning and 82% had him winning. In the rematch SOB landed three low blows to Kovalev's testicles. Those who say otherwise can't trust what their eyes are seeing, watch the video in slow motion, look at the still pictures, those blows were way below the belt! HBO should have called him out on it. HBO, Vegas wanted SOB to win by hook or by crook, but they took an exciting fighter who everyone wanted to watch and gave a gift to a cheat who nobody wants to see cheat.......................hold, wrestle, headbutt, low blows, holding Kovalev's leg, elbows, yet is was all legal for SOB, if Kovalev had hit SOB back to the testicles he would have been disqualified like SOB should have been!

    he beat the man in his prime at LHW, not the fortysomething.

    let it go, Indy.

    Anyway I would happily bet Ward is back in the ring soon, 33 is way too early to retire. Hes trying to lure a bigger name in than simply going up to CW and fighting against a bunch of forgettable fatties.

    Exactly! You may not like Ward but you have to like his mental toughness. He's one of the most mentally tough fighters I've seen in recent memory. He literally had Kovalev beat before the rematch was even fought.

    i doubt he retired to avoid anyone. Ward would just prefer to stand around talking stupid than fight. headbutting, hitting low, and clinching is hard work. he might be back after a few lost lawsuits, vs conor mcgregor in oakland. co-creature feature will be rhonda rousey vs pee wee herman.
