I read 300k in Dallas Stadium . Against a guy nobody ever heard of. . Thats a lot more than GGG ever did as the A side against name opponents. Plus he couldn't sell out MSG against Jacobs.
Floyd domestically is a massive superstar....he sells PPVs extremely well. But as a brand and business on a global scale, it is no where close to what a Mike Tyson product sells overseas. The problem is Mike doesn't own all of his trademarks. I think he gets royalty checks for different businesses that use his name or likeness on products they sell but It's no where near what he should be pulling in. Floyd is known around the world but he only sells here in the US and it's regulated to mostly revenues generated from fights. Tyson...his name, image and likeness is a global business that makes a ton of money domestically and abroad
I'm a huge Tyson fan and followed his entire career. For sure, he had much more drawing power than GGG ever could have had. That said, if GGG-Canelo does 2 million buys, that would be more than Tyson even did in any of his events. The largest of which was 1.99M in the Holyfield rematch. Being a part of a possible 2M PPV event pretty much solidifies one's relevance as a draw. No matter who Ward fought -- including GGG -- he would never get anywhere close to that. Let's see how the numbers shake out. I don't want to say too much before then. Until Floyd fought De La Hoya, he never did more than 350K buys. Then he fought Hoya and it shot up to 2.4M. Everyone needs that "breakout" opponent to raise his profile. Unfortunately for GGG, that opponent came at the end of his career. But for Ward, there was no opponent who could have shot him up to that level.
Never got the love from his home country, probably more fans in the U.K. Than in the US but it was all down to his deliberate stink out the joint tactics and I promise you when folk are being asked to fork out their hard earned dollars for PPV it's not lost on the fans that Ward didn't give two flying ***** about giving the fans something to watch let alone get behind. He tried in the first fight with Kovalev but after getting outboxed for a few rounds and getting dropped he reverted to his stinkfest stuff.
You would be surprised how many of the casuals have never heard of Andre Ward. Its pretty crazy. Whereas this fight was watched by very many people. Basically loads of UFC fans bought this fight.
GGG vs Sergio in his prime, vs Froch or JR does over 1 million buys easily. GGG is a draw, he's just needed a dance partner. A name.
Nobody likes a cheat either and it's mute point maybe as the refs never docked him but regardless the fans watching on tv saw the elbows, the low blows, the head butts and just the endless clinging and wrestling was just awful to watch, thank goodness only he was allowed to fight this way or else boxing truly would be dead.
Yeah , it was , but Canelo was he mega man , not Triple G. Pav vs Margrito was a mega fight , the Tornado was just the opponent. Golovkin is a proven PPV Flop. His career was spent waiting on a guy to move up and give him a mega pay day. He couldn't and still wouldn't make it on his own. Them the facts too.
If Ward was at 160lbs and FMJ fought both Ward and GGG, I know which one would get the higher numbers.Want to know why? Its because Ward barely appeals to the US market, he's not shipping PPV numbers abroad. GGG is.
