I voted Ward. Resume is a bit better. And I would also fancy him to win a quite boring fight between the two.
I voted Ward. Joe's record have the better names with a big margin, but they were all some way past their primes. Ward schooled Froch and stopped Kovalev, both in their primes. Calzaghe never showed himself superior to elite opponents like that. He beat a still relevant Hopkins, but only by a very close decision.
Froch was a bum though. Kessler was about okay. But Calzaghe beat him first anyway. Still, I voted Ward because I prefer elbow-headbutt combos to slapping and flapping like a mong.
Calzaghe beat Kessler first. Ward lost the first fight to Kovalev and the second one was nothing to be proud of. So Calzaghe is greater.
Why are you biased? another way looking at it is that Ward schooled Kessler. The first Kovalev was controversial but then again so was Hopkins - Calzaghe. you're not arguing old Hopkins is better than prime Kovalev, would you?
Ward .. Calzaghe's best career victory was not coming out of retirement .. he was a hell of a fighter but struggling against an old Hopkins put him into perspective to me ... he was terrific but not exceptional.
Not at Super Middleweight he doesn't. Calzaghe at Super Middleweight has Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, Bika and Kessler Ward at Super Middleweight has Kessler, Bika, Abraham, Froch and Dawson. Calzaghe beat more World Champions/former or future Champions at the weight than Ward. In terms of quality of opposition Calzaghe beat the better Kessler and Kessler was better than Froch, Ward beat the better Bika, while Abraham and the wieght drained Dawson are a similar level to 2/3 years past-prime Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell and Lacy. Fact of the matter is, their level of opposition was a similar standard but Calzaghe's resume - despite the many weak defences he made - has more depth at Super Middleweight. At Light Heavyweight, on the other hand, Ward's resume is indeed stronger.
you do made some valid points. But I am not sure your assessment on Kessler is correct. Why do you think Calzaghe beat a better Kessler? Also, Ward schooled Kessler and Calzaghe did not. I would say Kessler and Froch were about even. Do not know why you place Kessler above Froch.
Jeff beat nobody of note at SMW. A shot RJJ schooled him ffs! Ward done a better job on Kessler than Joe did. That was Joe's best win at that weight. Eubank was past his prime. He struggled to beat top comp past '95. Reid got robbed. A draw at worst. Woodhall was mediocre. Who will remember him as a great SMW?
