I can't stand ward, but the geographical location of where he beat the fighters on his record has absolutely no relevance to his legacy.
LMAO! WooooWeee!!! There are some riled up Ward fanboys in this thread! It is a simple question and a legitimate argument. Having home Field advantage in the US against UK and EE fighters has shown to be a major benefit has it not??! Spare us the personal OFF TOPIC jabs and state your reasons why Ward fighting only twice outside the states isn't a bit of a stain on his resume. Cool? Thanks
Derrrrrp! Because professional boxing was as worldwide in the 50's-80's as it has been the last 20 years. Lol
I'd have given him a bit of extra credit if there were a few "road warrior" wins sprinkled in, but it's not essential. That's just a personal preference & a way to split hairs when ranking fighters who are difficult to differentiate. I won't rank an inferior career over Andre's based on that metric, but if the comp is otherwise similar and fighter B did more in hostile territory, that would probably give him the edge. I doubt he'll make it in first ballot because the class is brutal, but he'll make it into the HOF for sure and could have been first ballot in a weaker class
Thats the problem mate. I felt that many American fans were desperate to try to rate a SMW above Calzaghe, possibly due to Calzaghe beating many of the top fighters from the U.S. so I think they try to build it more with Ward because of that. Ward fights Calzaghes leftovers who werent rated but suddenly were amazing when Ward beat them. It really did seem desperate at times. Ward had a decent career but hes (not in my opinion) an ATG. In the S6, he didnt once face any undefeated fighter and didnt have to do a run in that contest like Froch had to
I disagree. He would have lost the first fight to Kovalev if they fought in Russia for example, with neutral judges etc...
Why do you feel he didnt want to travel during the S6 with that in mind? How many of the original S6 contestants lost when at home?
Lol! Dirty Dan gets a bit riled up when the truth hurts. But it's pretty obvious if the first Kovalev vs Ward fight was in Russia or pretty much any neutral ground... Sergey would have gotten the nod and deservedly so! The rematch would have most likely not even happened.
That's why it's not the 2 career foreign fights that are a big deal, but what fights those 2 were. I don't care much if he fought 10 foreigners on their soil if they were 6 round developmental fights, but being the only fighter with all home fights in a tournament where everyone else travels IS a legitimate knock.
Thats the thing. Many fighters early in their careers have learning fights abroad. Hatton was on an American, Naseem Hamed undercard on I think his 2nd fight. But if they travel as a champ or for the big fights it is far more pressure. Look at how Degale travelled to win his world title against a fighter Ward didnt face, then travelled again to defend against another fighter Ward didnt face in Bute, defended again on the road against Medina and was away for a big unification bout. That really is credible
Yep spot on. And had that Froch fight happened in the UK with a GOOD ref and FAIR judges... I think it would have been a different story. Ward would have actually been forced to throw his hands and actually box rather than ducking below the waist, wrestling, elbowing and coming in with that head butt bs he liked to do.
Negative! The Kov fights only propel him into ATG status! The first decision was contaversial only beacuse Ward haters and Kovalev fansboys cried so much. Your post proves my point! Lol. Ward>Kov today, tomorrow and forever! LOL
He can't help it if Kovalev's promoter and the promoters of the other EE's are poors who can't afford to put up the money to get him on their soil. What happened to Lady Duva's secret Russian investor who was going to put all of this money behind Kova anyway?
