Please to break this down for me, your humble student of the game.

Assign a percent to each that combined equal 100.

    A) Size/Strength
    B) Boxing Ability
    C) Mob Connections

    And.... go!

    A. 20%
    B. 77%
    C. 3%

Do mob connections give you magical powers that lets you defeat Uzcudun, Loughran, and Sharkey in boxing fights?

Yes, of course, in boxing you need the right connections (mob or otherwise) to get the fights in the first place !

But you don't win fights simply by being matched with someone.

No, but you have a chance of winning. All sorts of factors can come into play then, including having the right connections again.

Whereas if you aren't matched with someone, you have ZERO CHANCE of winning.

Okay, maybe a guy breaks his leg, and you get a lucky win, one night.
But Campolo, Santa, Uzcudun, Loughran, Sharkey (Title Fight), Gastanaga (Louis avoided), Impelletiere, Levinsky, etc etc??

How many lucky breaks can a manufactured fraud get?
Honestly, when will you guys wake up, and balance what they wrote about him with his actual results?
Bring your common sense into it. The guy won most of his legitimate fights with top class boxers of the world at the time.

I'm a pretty big defender of Primo Carnera.
I don't think he should be singled out as he often is. I think he was ALWAYS something of a scapegoat for the ills of boxing.
It's not just Primo who benefitted from dodgy opponents, funny business, and underworld managers.

Very true. And we really explored this by going through the 1930's Boxing Commissions' pattern of strange disciplinary behavior. But you think it accounted for 50% of his success?

Didn't Louis rate Carnera as one of his top 5 wins?
Is there any possible subterfuge that can come with that testimonial?

I rate the size category so highly because, not only did it help him in the ring, it was a natural promotion tool.
What are your own thoughts, OP?

If Primo was the only SHW at the time, I'd give his size more credit.
But there were plenty of SHWs at the time, and it's not like they all rose to the top.
