You are rewording and repeating the same argument and like I said it's irrelevant how he lived his life. His resume speaks for itself. Any fighter's career can be put under the microscope, dissected and flaws found. Canelo played it safe, Hagler played it safe and many many others. What's that got to do with their overall accomplishments? Everybody could have did something different but it doesn't take from what they did do.

Exactly. revisionist history is running rampant here. Tito KO'd the #2 MW at the time.

Well Tito was ranked the number 1 MW, the number 1 p4p fighter, was the co finalist in the MW tournament and was a huge favourite.

If Hopkins didn't fight him it would have been a huge duck.

Joppy was a paper champ? You realize that the reason for that tourny was to establish a true MW champ? There was no MW world champ at the time. Even Hops would have to be considered, according to your words, a paper champ, until he defeated Tito. Prior to that fight, Hopkins resume was filled with contenders for the most part.

Joppy was a highly skilled MW with a resume deeper than what Brooks has.

Hopkins was very safe and careful with his career. After he spent 36 minutes at the Roy Jones Boxing Clinic for Ex-Cons, he hid out in the MW division, building a very impressive championship run, that consisted of B-Level fighters.

When it was finally time to step out into the sunlight for him, he fought Tito and Oscar, 2 guys who are HOFers and ATGs, for their accomplishments at WW/LMW, but definitely NOT at MW.

The guy is huge, he always stayed in shape and kept his body in a spot where he could make MW, but his frame is huge. He could've easily moved up and fought the beasts that were at 168 and 175, but didn't and chose to keep fighting Echols, Allen and Mercado like 5 times each.

He has 2 Losses to Jermaine Taylor, a loss to Calzaghe, should be two losses to Dawson, and I don't even count the beatings Kovalev and the white boy put on him.

Very overrated fighter IMO. He was fortunate to get some good fights against smaller guys late in his career and make some money though.

There's no shame at all in going for a record on number of defenses of a title. Wish people would stop repeating the myth that guys move up to challenge themselves...

    How is it irrelevant?

I've just shown you where he admitted to fighting naturally smaller fighters so that he held an advantage over them.

If you think that he had a great win over Oscar, then you are ignoring his comments and you obviously never saw the Sturm fight.

Yes it was quite a dimension lol! I admire his courage but i thought he could had a bit longer more lucritive career had he stayed at 154lbs for a few years. He couldve had fights against moseley, Oscar, Vernon, Ike just to name a few.

Yeah, I wonder about that myself. Even a rematch with Vargas and Oscar as you point out, plus Winky.
Oh well, he shoot for the stars. Still remember the chant of Tito Tito and the smiling face of Trinidad when Buffer introduced his name. Great fighter.

Hop was a victim of circumstance. It was a relatively weak middleweight era that he resided in. Jones too had a weak era at light heavyweight when he dominated good to decent level opposition. Not at all their fault. It is what it is. They beat everyone who was available. He did beat some smaller guys but he also beat up on some bigger guys as well. Bhop isn't over rated. He had a remarkable career spanning 3 decades against some stellar opposition. Some of his fights are master pieces inside the ring

Tito was a welterweight, I predicted that Hopkins would knock Tito out right here on this forum before the fight happened................

Joppy was the one who found Tito's illegal hand wraps. He complaint it after the KO loss to the latter. So, Hopkins knew this and did not allow Tito to wrap his hands like that to fight him. Tito could not do anything to hurt Hopkins throughout the fight because that cheat/trick was found out and prohibited.
Have you guys never asked yourself why did a skinny fighter like Trinidad hit so hard?

WE COULD ask the same about Hearns and a bunch of other skinny mofos that hit like they packed bricks.

You're right on the money! Other than the fact I got +400 odds (which was around the same time shortly after Tua had been a +400 favorite against Byrd). I never gambled much on boxing, but I dabbled a little bit from 2000-2004, and while my track record for picking fights is far from spectacular, I bet a Byrd-Hopkins parlay. I never actually got the parlay payout, however, because the date of Hopkins-Trinidad was technically moved back because of 911, and the fight was rescheduled for 2 weeks later.

But all of that being said, the spirit of what you're saying is 100% on the money. The large majority of fans and pundits were giving the "old" Bernard Hopkins almost zero chance. In fact, people were talking about a mega fight showdown between Tito and Roy at 168, and this was a hot topic at the time. People were looking right past Hopkins, Roy said he'd go down to 168, and Trinidad was all about moving up after becoming undisputed middleweight champion. And it's not just that Hopkins was a 4:1 underdog. The event, which was right in the midst of New York City recovering after 911 - the event itself was being viewed as a coronation for Felix Trinidad.
