when I was younger I thought Tyson was the dogs bollocks even thought he was better than Ali but no thinking about about it I feel he ruled a mediocre heavyweight division.people like micheal spinks Toby tubbs Tyrell Briggs were not really on the level .he got mullered by Douglas who never did anything after that.he first real fighter of quality was Evander Holyfield who took him apart.am I being too harsh on him.
Pre Don King and D'Amato's death Mike Tyson was unbeatable. Everything that happened after this time was not elite-worthy. Even I would have beaten Tyson from the Williams and McBride fights. His talent was exceptional though. He was just surrounded by bad people and he couldn't deal with money and fame.
prime was cut short just lik many thousands of athletes, but apparently tyson isnt allowed lengthy prison spell for a henious crime he might wel have not ommitted, as an excuse. did things noone else had done, or likely ill ever again. if he'd never existed and you werre walking past a school one day and someone told you that a fat-looking kid walking past would unify the HW title next year, you'd be laughed outta the country.
Underrated. He dominated the heavyweight division and fought everybody. However, his mental instability and out of ring problems destroyed him. After the Tony Tucker fight when he became undisputed he didn't have the same discipline and focus in the ring. In the Tyrell Biggs fight Mike was very sloppy and fouled all fight with elbows. Biggs should've fouled back, but never did. Also, Buster Douglas was a talented fighter that had great height and reach, but was lazy and hated training. In the Tyson fight he showed up in excellent shape was ready to go to war. In his fight with Holyfield he was way overweight and didn't even seem to care since he was make my $24 million.
I think you underrate him. You have to have amazing skills and ability to dominate the heavyweight division at only 5'10. I think other heavyweights even from his own era like Holyfield and Lewis would always beat him though.
don king was the beginning of the end for Tyson , King took tyson away from the Damato family and his trainers, now for somebody already not that stable , from this point on is was all down hill. Don king is poison.
I'd agree the Little Timmys of the world (especially us 80s kids) were/are too starry eyed but I'd balance the scales by saying that among forum geeks and "serious" historian types it has become reactionarily fashionable to give him far less credit than he deserves.
Good one, generally younger fans will say he's the greatest of all time . They don't have the catalog of experience others have who say,,,no, no he's not. At one time reactionary fans were putting him in the top 3, now he's slid down to around 10
You CANT penalize Tyson on impossible match ups at HIS peak that weren't available to him. Under Rooney /Cus he never lost and beat top guys EASILY of that 80's era who gave TOP 90's guys difficulties when out of their primes . Even After Rooney he had some great K.os pre and post prison life. Overatted based on what ? What are you overating him on ? Are we looking for loop holes ? Because the guy only lost ( with FAIR Scoring) around 10 rnds out of over 130 under Kevin Rooney and was the youngest HW champion in history, not sure ppl get that. You CANT overate Tyson bc he only lost when not at his best we all know that , unless one is claiming he is the greatest of all time which is false bc he was not on top long enough for that claim. If anything hes underatted by ppl NOT overatted. and thats because most dont use logical points and find those loop holes as anyone can do ( of course without logic)..lol
