So we have the former group made up of prime schmeling, sharkey, Carnera and Baer taking the place of Jack Finnegan, jj Corbett, Gus Ruhlin and fitzsimmons against Jeffries? How's the early 30 s guys do against the James J Jeffries of 1900 onwards? Who's your pick to beat big Jeff? And we'll put the fight s at 25 rounds
Schmeling would give Jeffries a terrific fight imo,in the only bit of footage of Jeffries in a fight in which he is pro-active , he stalks Ruhlin with his left at waist level he looks very open to the right cross .Ruhlin had a panic attack and didn't try and make Jeffries do anything he didn't want to,Gus had been ruined by body punches from Fitz ,as soon as Jeffries landed squarely on his torso he was looking for the door imo.Max had the power to bust up Jeffries but I don't think he would be able to stop him.Would Jeff lower the boom on Max? I think the German would see out the 20rds and probably lose a close dec to Jeffries. Sharkey? He had the boxing skills to make a fool out of Jeffries but was so mentally fragile.A few rib benders sunk into him on the borderline would probably see him sqawking to the ref around the 10th rd,ko for Jeffries. Carnera would absorb a methodical beating from Jeffries, but might surprise by lasting the limit ,because of Jeffries low punch output. Baer could stagger the Boiler Maker with his overhand right ,but could he drop him? Both had top chins ,but Jeffries had iron grit too,Max was a variable in that department. I'll say Jeffries wins a dec because he forces the fight as Parker did against Hughie "Stink The Joint Out "Fury.
A few points to add to McVey's analysis. During the 1930s, nobody seems to have questioned that Corbett and Fitzsimmons were better than the champions who came between Tunney and Louis. This does not mean that it was the case of course, but it should be noted. I think that when the fights fell during Jeffries title reign. The Jeffries that won the title from Fitzsimmons, was probably significantly more beatable than the version of the second Corbett figth.
Nicely gone in to mcvey. Sharkey, jack that is, was so bloody unpredictable at times. If he's getting low blows or border line punches he'll do a Golata and lose his head. Carnera with his size alone gives Jeff a bit of trouble but Its a close match. Schmeling could out point him, once again its which max turns up. Baer I'm Undecided about. The big punch against the solid chin. And how max actually fights, whenever he takes it seriously.
