Honestly right now, I have to say the division is kind of weak at the moment. Interesting but weak. Joshua is a proven talent, doing what he has to do, but that's about it. Wilder could have the goods but he won't fight anyone and looked cautious and pedestrian against his only rated opponent some years ago now. Povetkin, Pulev, and Ortiz are all in their late 30s or some say older. Parker is rubbish, good hands but cement shoes, was outboxed by Ruiz and Fury. Martin...is just not very good. I think some new blood will step up, I hope so at least.
So you're matching the best heavyweights from an entire decade (30's) with the best from a single year (2017)? To make it a fair comparison, how about if we pit the 30's fighters against the best from the last 10 years (2008-2017)? The "modern" team could then look something like this (others would no doubt chose differently): W. Klitschko V. Klitschko Povetkin Haye Fury Joshua Wilder Usyk Ortiz Pulev If we do it this way, it'll hardly be a wipeout for the 30's, no matter how you match them up!
Let's compare how well the current LHW division does against the HWs. I don't know about you, but I've got Beterbiev tearing a path through Joshua, Ortiz and co.
I generally go with the old skool in your match ups. But if the cream of the modern heavyweights fought each other at least once, or at least fought more frequently per year, we would be in a better position to judge.
Perhaps boxing is a lot more of an athletic pursuit and less of a magical skill competition than you suspect. Likewise, basketball, football (both types), baseball are as much skill reliant as boxing and the highest level observers of those sports all agree they have progressed over the decades. Why is boxing in such denial?
