Holmes had the better jab ! sharper/quicker more accurate and more power. Ali used his jab in more varieties as far as disguising it to set up power shots but Holmes also used it up top and down ,mixing it better overall as well. Where ali relied on movement with with the jab combined,Holmes controlled fights soley on that jab being more stationary and could do so because it staggered and stopped guys in their tracks.

Hear say sparring sessions also have said Holmes to out jab Ali in sparring.Ali taught Holmes to jab and Holmes added to it.

Best jab I've seen was Ali's during the first Jerry Quarry fight. That jab struck like a cobra it was so quick.

Holmes! He could hurt a guy with it. Control a fight with it. Ali's was good, holmes was great!

    Imo Ali.

Holmes uses more jab in fight.
    But ali was better.

I feel the best heavyweight jabs were:
    3. Liston (power)
    2. Ali (speed)
    1. Holmes (all-rounder)

Holmes is no 1 imo ! I feel Alis needed a bit more weight behind it to beat Holmes. H2H prime I think Holmes out jabs him too

Ali. His jab was pretty much impossible to counter.

Tons of right hands came over Larry's jab. Part of the jab thing is defense and bring it back so you don't get hit. One guy did that as well as anybody ever. The other guy did not.

Quarry didn't have the best defense against a jab. Chuvalo landed many jabs during his fight with Jerry.

They both had beautiful jabs. The story goes that when Holmes was Ali's sparring partner they used to see whos jab was faster and Holmes would win. Plus I think Holmes jab was probably more powerful.

Lol...Ali wins at everything in hypotheticals. Was he greater than Holmes? Almost definitely! Was he better than Holmes? Most likely but certainly debate worthy. Did he have a better jab? No! Emphatically no. Ali had a nice jab, that was top notch and he certainly employed it in such a way that it blended seamlessly with his style. But Holmes had the superior jab and frequently dictated the pace and distance by that tool much more effectively than Ali. Whereas Ali relied more on his movement and the jab was a complimentary tool in his arsenal. Not sure why Ali has to win every hypothetical even one of this nature

Ali's jab against Liston in the first fight was to me a perfect example of why his jab was better than Holmes.
