I am a fan of both guys but I find this perplexing. Why didn't GGG go after Canelos body? Why did he headhunt the entire fight?
He didn't want to give Canelo any counter punching opportunities. Going to the body would have most definitely given CA a chance to counter.
Sanchez has two different stories on this. The first is that Golovkin got warned for throwing a body shot which Canelo rolled away from and as a result it hit him on the back. So they refrained from the body attack. This sort of implies that they never trusted the ref to do a fair job. I thought the ref was pretty good, tbh. The second version is that Golovkin found it hard to land clean on Canelo's body and was concerned about getting countered. Frankly I find these explanations somewhat weak. Golovkin's body shots > Canelo's and I am also perplexed by their absence.
Canelo was out boxing. If ggg attacked the body a big portion of the time he'd leave himself to get countered up top. body work can be too telegraphed at a distance
Already been said, it was the counter putting him off imo. He knows hes slowing up so played it safe..Very intelligent fighter indeed. Don't want to say it really, but I will anyway..Hes right at the end of his career and fought the best fight that suited what hes got left imo(no excuses its evident). Wickedly talented fighter that is fighting on borrowed time. I think its mental what his team are saying" With Gennadys style, he can fight for another 5 years"...
He needs to keep busy. He can't let ring rust creep in at this juncture. He came to camp the most out of shape I've seen him. Golovkin looked better against Jacobs tbh, even though Jacobs was a better opponent. Canelo was dying in the mid rounds and GGG needs to get his body attack back somehow.
I think he did not go to the body because of quality of opposition.. The guys he fought before didn't really need to be broken down much, so GGG figured once he hit Canelo he would finish him. He didn't realize that a higher quality guy is harder to hit clean and he has to get his hands lower to land upstairs. He edged the fight I thought, but GGG showed that he really believed his own power would get to Canelo once he landed a few times and he tried and tried, but he didn't stop him.
I don't think he's got the energy any more to fight how he used to BCS8. He brings the pressure still but he's getting caught more and more easily before he gets his offence going in range. Like a slight hint he's starting to miss pulling the trigger. It's only my opinion but it all points to him sliding. When he gets caught with a shot he's taking that bit longer to set up his comeback(regroup) or be in a position to throw. Perhaps I'm over analysing, but he just appears a tired version of himself
Golovkin was only going to get the superfight to the condition he didn't damage the cash cow. Why kill the golden goose? He let him survive; in exchange he kept his titles, banked millions for himself and his coach. Would you do that for +20 millions? I certainly would.
