Do people here honestly think that defense wins you points in boxing?

Why do so many people here look at things like punch %'s and "Defense" when scoring a fight? All that matters is how many good clean punches land.

But I see people here who honestly think that if a guy is making punches miss, that is enough to win points... Defense is awarded because it prevents your opponent from landing, and it allows you to counter and land your own punches. Defense by itself has no reward, nor should it. Any amateur could get in the ring with a VERY good fighter and actually last a round or two if they just focused on running and playing defense. It is not hard to make punches miss, it IS hard to make punches miss and land your own at the same time.

I keep seeing people here who seem to think that a fighter should be awarded points, only because they are making their opponent miss. Some will point to things like, "WELL A LANDED MORE PUNCHES, BUT FIGHTER B LANDED AT A HIGHER %, SO FIGHTER B HAD BETTER QUALITY"

No he didn't. Throwing less punches and biding your energy typically leads to a higher % landed. All that matters at the end of the day is how many clean punches you land. If you disagree, you are everything that is currently wrong with boxing right now, and should stop following the sport.

Americans look at stats because they think its a NFL game, but defense is important all styles should get a fair shot otherwise you would just get one style and the fight game would get boring and predictable quickly

these clowns take the fighter first, and depending on who their favorite fighter is, that will determine what style they bull**** into awarding points. if their favorite fighter is a safety first runner, you can bet defense is at the top of their list. if their favorite is a jab and hug wrestler, you can bet ring iq bull**** is a top selling point. its not hard to smell their bull****, just connect a couple of dots.

People use defense as an excuse to play the "ring general" card.

In soccer the most you earn is 1 point for a draw. It makes for a crappy match.
In boxing defense is listed as the last criteria, you score point when you land clean punches.
So in my view, you can dance around looking cute but whoever land more clean punches wins the round.

This thread is a joke. It goes both ways. Fighters get credit just for walking forward and throwing punches regardless if those punches are not effective lmao

You guys are just sour because typically, the guys you hate are more skilled and versatile than the guys you love period.

naah, some of us just know it takes a lot more skill to make a guy miss in a phone booth than on a race track.

yup. in a round with no clean punches, it should be 10-10 or ring generalship may favorably influence the scoring when an opponent is not making a good fight otherwise the lousy fighter will be warned and maybe disqualified. to land a solid punch is how to score points and defense is only employed to prevent an opponent from gaining points and for self preservation. so many fights were corrupted that destroyed this system hence so many wins are not credible and fans are losing trust of the sport.

What if the guy makes the opponent miss in both scenarios?

I'll sum this thread up. Dumb down the sport in favor for limited fighters.

if he can make them miss in a phone booth, then making them miss in full retreat is unnecessary, unless youre hurt, in which case you didnt make him miss to begin with.

The object of the sport is to hurt the other guy more than he hurts you.

Percentage of punches landed doesn't matter if the number of landed punches is lopsided. If you throw and land one punch the whole round but your opponent throws a hundred and lands ten, unless that one punch knocks him out, you should lose that round. Ten sloppy landing punches are better than one clean punch.

You can score a round for a guy who landed fewer punches than his opponent, but he'd better have rocked and hurt his opponent and done more damage in the round. Pitter patter, tapping, tagging, and slapping shouldn't be rewarded either.

Defense is important because it helps you land your offense. Unfortunately we have negative fighters who run, stall, and hold. These boxers should either be disqualified or penalized. To score, you have to land.

Lmao. Bull ca ca answer. If you make your opponent miss in the middle of the ring, retreating and even when stuck on ropes, it deserves credit. As I said, you guys are sour because the guys you like are typically the more limited, less versatile fighters.
