Do people here honestly think that defense wins you points in boxing?

"All that matters is how many good clean punches land.""

    Right.

And if you have a great defense, your opponent won't land many good, clean punches. While your great, proactive defense will put you in a position to hit and not get hit.

Your question doesn't really make sense. It's a bit like saying 'does anyone really use the left leg when walking?'

Canelo wasn't in survival mode at any point, he was implementing a gameplan that involved movement because ggg struggles with movement as Jacobs clearly exposed. Doing that gameplan took a toll on Canelo's stamina or he wins this fight going away. If you can't distinguish between deliberately going on the backfoot (and inviting the opponent to close distance and create offense) from running/surviving, time to stop watching boxing right now.

It's also because he lacks the stamina to fight 12 hard rounds Sherlock. It's why he fights largely in spots. Again, when you're giving Jacobs 9-10 rounds against him you shouldn't questioning anyone's credibility.

Evading punches isnt exactly looked at and it shouldnt be.You could dodge 9 out of 10 of my punches ,if you didnt land one punch who won the round?

Its what connects not how many punches you didnt get hit with. Punches are what count...clean punches are obviously going to influence the fight,bc thats more important. If someone has superior defense its the ability to avoid punches and countering them with your own punches...that is true defense, thers more to it than just not getting hit,you still have to score your own punches to win a fight.

Lmao. Where did I say easy? Look, this is a damage control thread period. You owned yourself when you said clean punching. G made Canelo look like a defensive genius. Lampley doesn't sit here and say G is magically "deteriorating" without reason. You clowns need to get your make believe in check.

I don't have a full hour to commit to watching this just yet, in a distraction-free environment to give it the attention it deserves (probably won't for another week or so) but is there a highlights video showing Canelo making Golovkin miss as much as people are making it sound? Golovkin is generally pretty accurate, while Canelo isn't somebody I really think of as slick at the elite level. I mean when he fought Rhodes, sure, he was the slickest cat in the ring, but it's just really hard for me to separate the image of Canelo getting absolutely clowned as the ineffective aggressor by the likes of Mayweather, Trout and Lara so for him to suddenly be in that opposite role is just mind-boggling to me.

Exactly IB. How tf is Canelo looking like Floyd and Rigo. I ask myself the same question. Exhibit A and B Pacquiaotard style with sound effects, slo-mo and all lol

Second video the guy admits to tallying punches that don't necessarily land but still contact for both fighters just to give each benefit of the doubt. Judge with your own eyes.

    Just to settle this matter:

Effective defense is worth at least as many points (that is, points in the sense of abstract computational factors helping in adjudicating the action in a round, not points as in the integers themselves assigned to winners and losers of each round under the nominal "10 point must" system), as is "coming forward". Chew on that.

I'm saying defense ALONE doesn't let you get points.

Example fighter A throws 10 punches and lands 4

Fighter B throws 2 punches and lands 2.

Both are the same force and clean. But there are some folks on here who actually think that accuracy matters to the point where they would give the round to fighter B because he showed "defense".

No its not. The defense is only worth while if you yourself are landing punches because of it. Defense alone scores you NOTHING. It's easy to make people miss when you have no intention of landing anything yourself. Defense earns you points because it means less clean blows landed, not for the sake of defense itself.

IF you land 10 punches during a round, and your opponent lands 5, because you blocked/dodged everything else, that defense won you the round. But if you only land 1 and he lands 5, then it's his round. Despite your out of this world defense, you got beat up more than he did.

Like people have said here, people take sides based on who their favorite fighter is. The guys who like offensive fighters look at defense and say it's "boring" but look at most sports, defense wins championships. So many nuthuggers trying to defend their fondness for offense. If you want pure offense watch novice boxers. They think offense is everything. Those of us who understand boxing know mastery of the science goes far beyond punching power.

I'll take fighters like Rigo, Loma, Mayweather (PBF version), Whittaker, Ali over the likes of Walters, Donaire, GGG, Kovalev, Tyson, Foreman ...

Well the plan wasn't working LOL.

That was SURVIVAL at the end. He wasn't winning in the exchanges, if he was, he wouldn't have acted like a loser after the bout. Canelo knows he lost.
