Light Heavyweight Champ Billy Conn went into the 13th rd against Joe Louis in their first fight,he was ahead on the scorecards but elected to trade with the Brown Bomber and paid the ultimate price. Concerned that he would appear the "bully" in this fight Louis dried out to under 200lbs,he said in his autobiography that going into the fight he," felt like sh*t". Regardless of this, should the 199.5lbs Louis have taken out Conn quicker? Conn's weight was given as 174lbs, but he is believed to really have scaled just 168lbs. Given that a puncher as tremendous as Louis had a 30lbs pull on his opponent, shouldn't he have taken him out before the 13thrd? Your thoughts on this?
My thoughts is I have said this before and you frown upon it, but yes, Louis if he was as good as a boxer as some thing should not be behind on the cards vs. a much smaller man, who in fact stunned him. If this were 12 rounds we have a new champion. If Conn had any sense, he takes the decision. If you want the straight dope, Louis was down on the score cards in a rounds won to round lost ratio in the fights vs his best boxers...Schmeling, Walcott, Conn, and Charles...by a wide margin. I have a thread on it if you want the data. Why did Louis struggle vs good boxers? He had slow feet, poor defense, a lousy guard and needed his feet planted to fire, as he had trouble hitting moving type of targets. He was also easy to counter.
Louis was past it against Walcott and Charles. If Louis was that bad, how come he was champ for12 years and made 25 successful defences?
Hadn't fought in 4 years since his victory over Tony Zale in 1942: Joined the U.S. Army on March 7, 1942. Broke his left hand in a fight with his father-in-law on May 10, 1942. It caused the cancellation of his planned June 25 rematch with Joe Louis. The fight was rescheduled for October 12, but Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson cancelled the bout on September 25 and ordered Corporal Conn and Sergeant Louis to return "at once to their military duties." Conn and Louis were inactive for four years due to World War II. Fought a rematch with Joe Louis for the World Heavyweight Championship on June 19, 1946. Louis won by an eighth-round knockout.
cracks me up Joe slow why didn't Joe KO him sooner the only thing that counts Joe Louis KHTFO who cares if he didn't KO him sooner.
those movers. Jo ko them Joe behind score cards He ko them easy to counter Joe Ko them Poor defense ? the man was heavyweight champion for 11 years he must have done something right. screw your made up fantasy land data stop trying to rewrite history.
Yeah, but there are many movers and much better hitters. There were just very few in Louis day. As for data, no-no, not fantasy. An older post of mine re-posted for your reading pleasures. who cares about your data Sound like your great grand daddy lost a lot of money betting against Joe Louis. Joe Louis great fighter stop trying to rewrite boxing history.
You make some good points, those four fighters were some of the best though, Louis in his prime KO's Charles . I'm a big Max Schmeling fan, when he beat Louis it was an incredible performance and Joe couldn't adjust during the fight. I think the Conn fight was Joe's worst, but when you defend that many times you'll have an off night
