Styles make fights, FRazier and Norton gave Ali hell, both were destroyed by Foreman, Ali then defeats Foreman pretty easily. All fighters had a fighter or style that gave them difficulties. And we can use that as an indicator of how a fighter would've done against a fighter with that same or similar style. In other words Conn gave Louis fits, What would the bigger, stronger, and faster Ali would've done? But the most important thing is, like all great fighters, Louis found away to win.... And that's ultimately what's remembered.

Never ceases to amaze me the morons who talk **** without either knowing what their looking at or having never seen what they are talking **** about to begin with.

You can listen to the radio broadcast and see that not only is Conn doing great in the film but that some of his other great moments ended up on the cutting room floor.

The idea that Louis suddenly changed his strategy in the 13th and cranked it up a notch is nonsense. Watch the two fighters and tell me which ones performance is inconsistent with the prior 12 rounds. Thats Conn. Credit to Louis for wearing the smaller fighter out but lets not pretend that Louis suddenly woke up and decided to end the fight as if he could have earlier. Louis was in there fighting, stalking, and trying the entire 12 rounds the difference was that Conn, not Louis, had to expend all that energy to compete with a much bigger man and by rd 13 he had shot his bolt.

    I disagree.

I don't think anyone is saying Louis changed his strategy. But, he did come into the 13th with a noticeably renewed pace, which is evident upon viewing and is also consistent with reports. So, not nonsense, at all, really...

No, not "some people" just you.
"By the time the 8th rd came up,I was tired as hell and I stayed that way until the 12th.The 12 th round didn't help-I was completely exhausted, and he was really hurting me with left hooks.I was hoping that he would lose his head and gamble because I could see myself saying "bye bye title".
"At the end of the 12th rd Chappie said ,"You're losing on points you got to knock him out".
In the 13th rd,Conn got too cocky. He knew just like I did he was winning.Conn don't come out boxing now; his mistake. He wanted to try and slug it out.We got into a clinch, and he said,"Joseph ,you're in for a tough fight tonight." I said"We'll see".
Son of a gun,he started that long left hook I'd been waiting for.I zapped right to his head.He turned numb.I said to myself,"I gotcha now,".Then I went into my routine rights and lefts, rights, and lefts. He went down.I saw him trying to get up,but he couldn't.
I'd hurt my left wrist punching down on Conn's head in the 7th rd.It nearly killed me for 3 rds.but the pain went away.Conn sure knew what it was about in a ring.He was one clever fighter.Only thingif hed kept his cool,he might have been the champion, but he didn't."Joe Louis.

I would make a couple of observations here.

At one point Conn slipped and fell, and Louis stepped back from him and allowed him to get up.

He was not obliged to conduct this act of good sportsmanship.

Also some accounts suggest that Jack Blackburn advised Louis, that Conn was leaving himself open to a right hand counter.
