There were plans for middleweight contender, David Lemieux, to fight on the Miguel Cotto undercard at New York's Madison Square Garden on December 2nd. But it turns out he might have bigger fish to fry now.

According to Eric Gomez, the President of Golden Boy Promotions (which handles Lemieux, alongside Eye of the Tiger Management):

"We just received a letter from the WBO and it's been ordered that he has to fight (Billy Joe) Saunders as the mandatory. I'm going to start having conversations with Frank Warren," Gomez told BScene

There had been talk of Lemieux also getting his own HBO date on December 16th. When asked if a Saunders-Lemieux fight could happen then, Gomez told ******* on Monday afternoon:

"Yeah there's a possibility of doing it by December. It's all negotiations, I'm going to start talking to Frank Warren and see what he has in mind. Definitely it can happen in December."

The assumption is that HBO would be interested in this match-up.

"We would hope so, we would hope that HBO would support that fight," said Gomez. "They're in the Lemieux business. Lemieux's been fighting well the last couple of fights, so yeah, I would think so."

BTW I think this is a great fight, I wonder if it will be in the US or UK?

I dont think Warren can win a purse bid vs Golden Boy. BJS may have to bring his belt to America.

If Cotto fight is a PPV then this could be a worthy co-main

Uncle Frank must have had a word, wasn't Monroe actually the mandatory in the end? So 2 mando's in succession.

Hopefully this comes through but Lemieux has had bigger fish to fry lol, and was saying Saunders was wanting too much money. A couple of laughable excuses, hope he doesn't pick up an injury lol.

Frank can win a purse bid for sure, you have to remember Bill gets 75%, so if Frank makes the fight he can just pay Lemieux and Billy 25% each and put 50% back in his pocket lol

IIRC, Lemieux was the mandatory after Murata chose to follow the WBA path, but had to delay taking the fight in the summer. He cited injuries & wear and tear from fighting too quickly after the Stevens fight.

Monroe took his spot, but not the mandatory position. Slick Willie counted as a voluntary.

GBP is going to bid an absolute fortune to make sure they land this. Getting the final piece of the middleweight title puzzle is worth a tremendous amount to them: If Canelo wins the rematch, they'd be able to make an in-house total unification fight & an easy sell given the stakes & styles of the fighters. If Canelo loses, they can either cash Lemieux out again to GGG, or match Lemieux up with Canelo to get a belt back around Cinnamon's waist.

So Oscar beat Eddie Hearn to the punch. What's Hearn going to do now to get Jacobs his promised rematch with GGG?

Saunders will duck.... On the bright side this forces him into a corner and makes the Golovkin fight in the next 3-4 months a real possibility.
