So with Ward retired the landscape at LHW is: WBC: Stevenson - will probably defend against Alvarez next. WBA: Bivol - will defend against Broadhurst next WBO: Kovalev vs Shabranssky for the title IBF: Beterbiev vs Koelling for the title So assuming all the favourites win, the four titlists at the end of the year will be Stevenson, Bivol, Kovalev, and Beterbiev. Some good unifications to be made there! Also, poor Gvozdyk somehow doesn't get a title shot despite being #2 WBC, #4 WBA, #4 IBF, and #1 WBO - Kovalev at #2 WBO jumps over him for that title.
Feeling sorry for Gvozdyk here, although he will become mando for at least 2 of the belts pretty damn soon. Hope he can win a pursebid against one of them, calling the shots.
Yes. But to be fair, Kovalev, Bivol, and Beterbiev would all be worthy champions, and Gvozdyk vs any of them would be a very good fight. What we really need is a WBSS tournament for the LHWs next year.
That would be great. It's a shame Ward has scattered all the belts again, as I expected LHW would be among the first to be completely unified about 3 years ago. A 175 tourney can repair the damage done all at once, and give us the fights we want to see.
Imagine that. What would it look like? (Stevenson wouldn't participate) Kovalev Beterbiev Bivol Gvozdyk Smith Jack Barrera Kalajdzic Two Reserves Fonfara Browne Shabranskyy
The powers that be don't want a unified Champion at LHW. I firmly believe Ward's "wins" were orchestrated to create this mess.
Get Smith Jr out of there and put Alvarez in, even though i don't rate him highly he should be higher ranked than Smith Jr. And Kalajdzic who are both coming off losses.
Both of these guys should be at cruiserweight. Not a bad title fight but Gvozdyk should be named an immediate mandatory.
