popularity+dominance and resume against division contemporaries

The amount he accomplished in his relatively
short career was amazing. He was basically elite
level from about 12 fights in and was a champion
for the majority of his career. He went undefeated (albeit controversially
against Winky) against 2 potential HOFers (Winky and Ike), His prime losses were
wars against 2 legit HOFers and ATGs in Tito and Oscar. This was all
damn near back to back to back. And all of that within what, his first 25 fights?
I think he's first ballot. That's a great resume IMHO

I agree he got pushed too far too quick and burned out, but still

Wasn't Curry rated number 1 - or close to it - p4p at one point? He can't not end up in a HOF that has Arturo ****ing Gatti in it.

Looking back at the list I'm really saddened that Sumbu Kalambay has yet to be considered for the IBHOF, let alone even mentioned. A lot of people mostly know him for his 1st round KO loss to Michael Nunn but he was a severely underrated technician who still doesn't get his dues. This was a guy who has wins over a prime undefeated Mike McCallum, prime Herol Graham, Steve Collins, and Iran Barkley.
Michael Nunn and Marlon Starling should be on that list as well.

    Right?

Imagine ten years from now we're discussing how someone like, say, Chocolatito (also briefly p4p #1) got left off the ballot for a few years while somebody like Ivan Redkach got in.

I was thinking more Chocolito left off and Provo in but yeah I hear ya. Donald needs his spot.

That's a hell of a frontline in his W column, bolstered with a secondary consisting of Sims & Dewitt (both perennial contenders, later rivals for the inaugural WBO title not long after both challenged Kalambay, with DeWitt beating Sims to become the org's first champ), Dell'Aquila (2x Italian MW champ and 1x Euro champ, later challenged James Toney for the IBF world title, when "Lights Out" was prime and still knocking suckas out more often than not), tough guy and high-guard swarmer Giovanni De Marco x2, hard-punching southpaw Clint Jackson, and he probably ought to have one more A-tier victory, over Kalule. (very bad officiating in that fight, reffing and scoring)

In other words, he isn't just some guy that picked up a couple of lucky fluke wins over big names by catching them at the right time or whatever. He also Zamboni'ed the ice with the grills of the next few lines on the bench (to put in hockey terms) proving there was substance to his top work. Just a solid guy all-around. Not sure he carries the wow factor that would make him pop in either remembrance from the old-heads or newfound appreciation from the younger generation. No super lengthy reigns or multiple weight division climbs, no sensational signature splashy KO's or anything. Just a solid guy. You could argue his case to get in but I honestly am not surprised to see him omitted. Just don't think his body of work, respectable as it was, rates as quite "sexy" enough for the Hall's standards.

Okay yeah, in fairness to Gatti, comparing him to Provodnikov is more realistic than Redkach.

Come to think of it Provo vs Gatti would be a guaranteed barnburner. Who would pick in a fantasy match up?

that is the argument, although being in a great fight does elevate a fighter quickly. Gatti gave us some great fights even though someone like Curry beats him easily in his prime. I think Donald probably should get in. I was shocked when Honeyghan beat him. Sometimes I think maybe it was more Lloyd than we want to give credit for. Lloyds was undefeated and could punch and had decent speed and he rattled off nice combinations which could have given Donald trouble even in 1985. Styles make fights.

Ooooh damn. Provo is probably a little more durable but Gatti has the skill edge, was a bit more versatile slipping between the boxer and brawler roles. Damn. Yeah, that would be a powder keg.

Not just a solid guy, he was one of the finest pure boxing technician in the MW division at that time, known for his superb defense and counter punching skills. His performance against McCallum in the first fight is still one of the best display of boxing against a really solid fighter. Even after his shocking (somewhat flukey) KO loss to Nunn, Kalambay still had some fight still left in him as shown when he arguably beat McCallum again in the rematch.
No he wasn't that well known outside Italy, but with all the other less talented, unworthy fighters being thrown in on that list there is no way a guy like Kalambay should get left out.
