Any idea on Eubank Jr Vs Yildirim and Groves Vs Cox PPV numbers?

Anyway as for the question, no, you don't have to be with Matchroom to be a PPV star.

Matchroom and Sky just know how to advertise and sell an event and what it should look and sound like, some other promoters just don't seem to understand what all sorts of boxing fans want in my opinion.

They have changed the audience, they make no apologies and they do not disguise they try to appeal to what some call casual fans and it works.

and also that when AJ fights hes on commercials Everywhere! from drinks to Nike he was selling it plus TV shows like league of their own and the one show you couldn't flick the switch over to another face a week before the Wladimir fight!

    Yeah, maybe.

But i guess my point was similar to the eubank or the wbss situation...

ITV have the most potential out of any of the networks to build a fighter and make mega money on PPV because of there reach. But to do that AJ could of had his early fights on free to air ITV and then his later fights on PPV... maybe he would lose slightly early doors i dont know but he certainly would make even more on PPV in my opinion

Atm after AJ i suppose CEJ is the next in line to be ppv material.
Hearn hasnt really been involved in jnr development, so i would have to say you dont have to be with hearn to become ppv but i do think eddie is the best man for the job

That last bit is so true. You think casual matchroom AJ fans know who Liam Williams is? But they'll know who Sam Eggington is.

On topic, if Frank Warren was promoting Joshua he'd be fighting for the WBO European title in his 25th fight.

Eddie is the man when it comes to building a fighter's profile.

True on all points but remember Junior owes 90% of his exposure to the general public to his dad and the Eubank name. If Eubank wasn't a second generation fighter, he would be probably be a huge fan favourite amongst hardcore boxing fans actually, but with far less public profile.

100% agree and if he wasnt he would almost certainly be with the likes of Eddie Hearn.

Hearn does his job well but it's the media machine behind him that has a vested interest in helping create profitable stars.
It's not just SKY SPORTS and SKY SPORTS NEWS, which is massive exposure.
SKY is also linked with The Sun newspaper, the largest daily newspaper circulation in UK.

The only (sort of) successful example of a FTA to PPV fighter in recent times is Amir Khan who fought on ITV before moving to Sky.

Joe Joyce may be one to watch on how to build a fighter on FTA TV as he does have David Haye behind him as a hype man.

It's totally possible for any channel/promoter to make a star but clearly they need to be committed with consistent promotion and money especially at the start of a career.

And now talk sport hence the drive time interview they had with Joshua the other day. And the radio rights. It really is a perfect all round package now with huge old and new media platforms. Look at twitter followings of matchroom fighters v boxnation ones. It shows the reach is huge. BT deal helps them, mostly the 'prospect' type fighters, but its still going to take time for them to get near to sky.

In fairness It was working well with Froch that helped propel Eddie Hearn to the masses as it indeed did with Froch working with Eddie. Carl was his first big ppv fighter and I was going to say AJ has taken up a notch but I believe if Froch was younger and fought on he would have carried out being a huge ppv star who sold out stadiums. AJ and Hearn are clearly a good match though, work really well together.

Great post. I agree he would have been like a less skilled Froch (in first half of his career), loved by the hardcore fans for his all action combatitive style but he unknown to the masses.

Now I wouldn't give Hearn the steam off my **** but the guy sells fights. How much of that is Sky and how much is him is up for debate but the fact is he has Sky and he sells fights.

Has Frank Warren ever sold out Wembley? No. Could Frank Warren have convinced Wlad to come over here? I doubt it. As for Fat Mick, that guy couldn't have successfully promoted Hagler Hearns 2 let alone the dross he often tries to foist upon from some leisure centre.

I think Hearn is the best as doing this. Partly because he is a good promoter but a lot of it is Sky being a very good platform to hype up fighters. Furthermore with Joshua they got a big puncher and an exciting fighter who is a heavyweight and British, who is also perceived by the public as being a nice guy of the sport. Naturally he was going to be a massive ppv star in the UK. I don't think that much of it is to do with Hearn but he's definitely good at his job.
