People are kind of hard on Marvis because he wasn't as great as his dad. But in Marvis defense, he came in the first era of super heavies, while his dad came along in the last era of cruiser sized heavies. Marvis, from the way he was built, weighed as much as a heavy, but his body structure looked like that of a smaller man. He had some good wins at heavy, but should he have been a cruiser instead?

Yes he definitely should've been, I think he could've captured a crusierweight belt.

I reckon he could have made Cruiser without any great dilemna and he would have went well too.

Would Braxton /Holyfield at cruiser have crossed paths with Marvis?

frasier would have had no respect for the CW division like a lot of his contemporaries, its likely. I susopect it would not have motivated him, as was the case with other divisions like SMW back then which the best boxers only passed through faster than Chinese tourists in Rugby.

he did fine at heavy, had some good wins, was very good . they cant all be champ! I like a lot of guys that never won a belt better than guys that did.

I dont think he should have fought period. The sons of great fighters dont seem to make it. Probably because they become fighters to emulate their fathers and make them proud, not because its who they really are.

But yes he could have made CW but wouldnt have beaten qawi mor Holyfield, maybe givwn Deleon a really good fight

That's a bit rough. The guy was a top 15 heavyweight and beat some top 10'ish guys. He very very likely would have been a champ at some stage at Cruiser. He's more successful than well over 99% of boxers.

He was better off when Benton trained him and he was boxing before dad took over.

Take away holmes ,tyson and holyfield....and marvis has a better streak of wins at hw than anyone in the 80s....bugner,bonecrusher,ribalta,
    Tillis and broad.

If he hadnt been rushed in with holmes...in that little pass the parcel title during 84-86 (just before tyson) he very well couldve picked up a title belt...but being a frazier was all about being no 1 and quickly and confronting the best head on....hence holmes snd tyson...in many ways i think joe ruined his sons career with his kamikaze match making and sink or swim mentality...the only hws i see beating marvis in the 80s were the two who did plus foreman and dokes

I think he outpoints bruno, witherspoon, ruddock and williams...tubbs is no problem...he outswarms thomas

Im not trying to be rough. Chavez jr also won a title but i feel like both could have done more productive and fullfilling things with their lives. Their das were fighters so they wouldnt have to be. Im also not a fan of fighters getting trained by their fathers. It creats a strange dynmamic were the son does everything he can to make the father proud but the father is giving the wrong instructions. mosley and trinidad sr were both not good trainers imo.

Marvis was not devoid of talent but i dont see him beating qawi or holyfield who were the main guys at CW during that time.

I agree with most of that apart from the last part. The likes of Witherspoon, Thomas and Ruddock would have been too strong and hit too hard for Marvis who you could see tried to fight like papa Joe but lacked Joe's punch and toughness to be as successful with that style.

I read that naturally, Marvis was more of the stick and move boxer type rather than a pressure fighter like his dad. But his father wanted him to fight like he used to and when your father was a HOF heavyweight champion, who are you to argue?

I do think that Marvis perhaps should've been trained and managed by someone a little more objective. There's no reason in the world he should've been in the same ring with Larry Holmes and Jesus Christ, who can forget the trainwreck that was a young Mike Tyson?

Frazier would have been fighting for titles before Qawi and Holyfield were factors. Given a good run he very conceivably could have been getting ok money to fight the likes of Qawi and Holyfield as they emerged in the division. He could well yhave given them a good battle to be honest, particularly if Benton stayed on as his trainer.

I guess whether Chaves Jr and Frazier had more productive things to do than being boxing contenders and champions depends on ones perspective and their own inner workings. Both have made substancial money of their own and had great success in the big scheme of things irregardless of how great their pops were.

I do understand where you are coming from and am not out to bust your balls tho.

There were some good guys in that division

    Carlos DeLeon
    Evander Holyfield
    Dwight Braxton

Marvis could have dropped down after the blowout loss the Holmes.
