Does anyone at 160 today stand a chance against a prime Roy Jones jr?

Roy was light years better than GGG or Canelo. He would make them both look like they were walking in quicksand. On his best night, Roy may even stop the iron chinned GGG. He has a high probability of stopping Canelo.

 

If Jones came in the ring at 180 in the 20s, he would be classed as a Heavyweight. Thats my point, Im tired of repeating.

GGG would have been a good fight. But apart from that, NO!

 

Roy was light years better than anybody, but I'm not sure if he ever fought anybody as skilled or as powerful as Canelo or Triple G. At least not while Roy was a Middleweight.

I mean who did Roy fight before he moved up to SMW in 94 that had the all around skill set of a Prime 160-lb Canelo or the power of a Gennady Golovkin? Both of these guys would give Roy a tough fight, and I'm sure if you asked Roy he'd agree.

I mean Roy fought Hopkins, but that was before Hopkins really came into his own. And Hopkins never had the power to hurt Roy like a Canelo or Triple G. Roy had a speed advantage on everybody, and Canelo or Triple G would be no exception. However it was evident that Canelo had a speed advantage on Golovkin, so whatever speed advantage Roy had, he would have less of a speed advantage vs Canelo and more of a speed advantage vs Golovkin, making the Canelo fight harder for him.

Canelo has upper body and head movement that would bother Roy, whereas Gennady is straight up and down and would be more of an easy target for Roy. Canelo's counter punching ability and speed would make a fight with Roy more interesting and more of a chess match.

Please explain how Roy would have a better chance of stopping Canelo than he would Triple G? Canelo has better defense, and G is an easier target to hit hard and clean as evidenced on September 16th.

 

If Canelo could barely lay a glove on a 37 year old Mayweather then what does that say about his chances against a prime Roy Jones at MW ?? At 168 Roy was faster, hit harder, naturally bigger, stronger than Floyd and equally as hard to hit.

 

Because we're comparing 2017 Canelo vs 1994 RJJ. When Canelo fought Floyd he was fighting at a 152-lb catchweight, which was below the lowest weight RJJ ever fought at. Also it's not accurate to say that he could barely lay a glove on a 37 year old Mayweather. Floyd was 36 years old when he fought Canelo if I'm not mistaken, and Canelo landed his gloves on Mayweather quite a bit. Not enough to win a decision, but enough to give Floyd his most competitive fight in years.

No, if we're trying to visualize a fight between Canelo and RJJ, you need to really go weight-for-weight. This is the first year that Canelo has really been at one of RJJ's prime or near-prime weights. If you compare SMW or LHW Roy vs current Canelo, that's really not a fair comparison because you're giving away 8-15 lbs. I think most people agree that Roy was a much bigger puncher and much more dangerous at SMW and LHW. So for comparison purposes, we need to look at early 90s Roy, more specifically mid 1994 Roy as probably the best MW version of Roy vs 2017 Canelo. Triple G on the other hand, based on what people are saying about how he's on the decline, perhaps the best version of him may have been from a few years ago.

 

Just because Roy didn't stay at middleweight does not mean he wasn't most dangerous there. Roy moved up in weight to pursue better opponents such as James Toney, not to avoid anybody. Had Roy remained at middleweight, he would likely have decimated most of the opposition in short order (Like he did to the normally durable Thomas Tate.) The only fighter that gave him even the slightest trouble at middleweight turned out to be a Hall of Fame fighter in Hopkins. And, Roy still won that fight comfortably. If Roy didn't blitz Canelo early, he certainly would do so when Canelo's gas tank ran out (like it always does) in the mid to late rounds. I think he would have his way with Golovkin. Golovkin has an excellent chin, so a stoppage win is far from a certainty. But, if I had to pick a fighter whose combination of power and incredible speed had a chance of stopping Gennady, it would be Roy Jones.

 

Bumlovkin probably doesn't go past 6. Roy had speed and power in abundace @ 160 the likes of which the Triple Duck has never seen. This fight isn't even competitive...

What a dumb and illogical thread. Jones jr. was a baby at 160! And he moved up because he had to - he was growing to a man. And no, he is no superman (even with PEDs) who could do what ever and when ever he wanted to - the list of quality fighters that he refuse to fight is long, but by some of you, forgotten.
