Anthony Joshua would have knocked out Mike Tyson, says Larry Holmes

There is zero doubt that Anthony Joshua would have destroyed a ‘prime’ Mike Tyson, according to former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. Tony Bellew: Wilder needs to fight a Whyte or Chisora to EARN Joshua showdown in Britain Holmes fought and lost to Tyson during his heavily decorated career, but thinks Joshua would have been able to not only beat his former opponent, but knock him out. Joshua is aiming to establish his name alongside the heavyweight greats and his quest continues on Saturday against Carlos Takam.

The 28-year-old already holds three world titles and Holmes believes Joshua’s power and ringcraft would be too much for Tyson. ‘Joshua would have knocked out a prime Mike Tyson there’s no doubt about it,’ Holmes told the Independent. ‘Mike Tyson went down low and then came up and tried to throw roundhouses. But Joshua would just hit him with a straight right hand on the side of his damn chin and Mike wouldn’t get up.

‘I’m not taking anything away from Mike Tyson – he kicked my ass. ‘But if Mike fought anybody who boxes behind a jab, moves out and throws punches, they would whoop his ass just like Lennox Lewis did, just like Evander Holyfield did and just like a couple of other guys too. ‘They weren’t all great fighters that beat him.

‘That’s why I think even Tyson at his best, Joshua would knock him out. ‘He punches hard and he isn’t going to stand there and let Mike hit him. ‘He got knocked down by Wladimir Klitschko and got up again. That shows you he’s ready to fight.’

Joshua has assembled a perfect knockout rate in his 19 professional fights and defends his title as the stoppage king against Takam in Cardiff. The heavyweight is the heavy favourite in the fight after Takam stepped in to replace the injured Kubrat Pulev on less than two weeks notice. Joshua is expected to sell out Cardiff’s Principality Stadium as he fights in Wales for just the second time in his career.

Holmes also thinks Deontay vs AJ is a 50/50 fight, so if anyone accepts this opinion, they gotta accept that one too. :crazylick:

Guys like Larry Holmes say one thing one day and the opposite thing the next.
I'm pretty sure I've heard him say very recently "if Tyson was around today he'd beat everyone" - or words to that effect, etc.

Holmes was a great champion, but his opinions about how fighters from different eras match up, are not particularly coherent.

Even in his prime Holmes was a bit muddled.
5 minutes after defeating Renaldo Snipes, Holmes was still under the impression he'd just fought "Bernardo Snipes".

    But I love Larry Holmes.
It's the flying drop kick off a limo that will always be my fondest memory of the great man.

Sour grapes from old Mr. Holmes....Tyson would have brutalized AJ like he did Tyrell Biggs and Pinklon Thomas.

Joshua would be Tysons most dangerous match up ,but there would be nothing easy about defeating Tyson .There is close to zero margin of era against Tyson if hes on point which was almost always in the 80's. Will be interesting to see how Joshua takes too Takam bc he is a shorter aggressive fighter that joshua wont be fighting to many like him and style. We know bigger Hw's at times did better against Tyson so the reasoning behind a Joshua win who also hits hard is not some strange view. How is it?

Joshua is much taller and much heavier than Tyson, almost as fast and has way more heart and fortitude when the going gets tough. I think he has a great chance of knocking out Tyson quicker than anyone ever. Put it this way, fight by fight his career is way more accomplished up to press.......

Lol @ larry thinking AJ has "ring craft"...i see a prime tyson with AJ being very similar to mikes brutalization of Larry and biggs and thomas....if he thinks the AJ who got knocked down by a injury ravaged weights training reliant 41 year old wlad himself used to fighting inferior bums all his career and getting beaten by half decentamerican HWs than i think larry was drunk....than again larry always had foot in mouth disease when discussing other boxers....hes never been man enough to say he beat a parkinsons ravaged old inactive Ali...he thought with the same conviction he could beat tyson as he now thinks aj beats tyson
