Remembering a prime Tyson and watching how far he fell just conjures up all sorts of sad emotions. He looked like he was really trying in that fight, but just didn't have it. Lewis was just too much to the point where the fight was completely one sided.

Clearly showed a guy desperate for a final big pay day. Lewis got his ultimate legacy sealing victory while Tyson got his much needed paycheque to deal with his debts. Win-Win for both fighters.

Hardly sealed his legacy. Mike was 13 years past his very best.

I remember feeling sad watching it live.
Tyson kind of redeemed himself by taking his beating like a man, didn't foul out.
But it was one of those moments where you realize big-time professional boxing can be a very sordid business.

I don't think Tyson ever wanted the fight, I think he knew he was likely to take a beating, but he'd been built up again to satisfy the money-making-machine of big time boxing. Lennox Lewis had called for this fight for years, and there was so much money for everyone else around it too. I think they even has Tyson sign up to a two fight deal, win or lose, and Lewis sued Tyson for not fighting him again ! LOL

Tyson went bankrupt anyway, so what did he gain really ?

It was sad seeing him trying with so little of his former ability. He wasn't in great shape and he simply wasn't going to win. The way he'd been built up as a serious challenger for the satisfaction of the non-hardcore fans is a bit scandalous really. I don't blame Lewis and the promoters for making the fight but the amount of pundits and commentators who were talking as if Tyson was going to win was shocking. I even remember magazines ranking Tyson as the best heavyweight in the world in 2001, above Rahman and Lewis. It was all to make money for everyone. It was a bit like the Ali v Holmes situation. Money trumped common sense.

True, but Lewis should be ashamed of that "win".

Had he fought him between '96 & '00 it would have been a better win.

He doesn't need to be ashamed of anything. There has been hundreds and more similar matches made throughout history. Should Holmes be ashamed of Ali? Marciano of Loius? Tyson of Holmes? These matches are actually worse.

At least he got the job done and won. He was no spring chicken himself even if still fighting at a high level.

I was about 15 at the time of that fight and I remember thinking Tyson would win because I was thinking of the Tyson of when I was a baby plus I didnt know much about Lewis at the time. Knowing what I know now, it was all so predictable in hindsight

Lewis was "the man". Tyson was shot.

Yeah, Holmes should be ashamed of that fight.

You have one man to blame there, Mike Tyson.

There are A few fights I refuse to ever do a full breakdown on. Holmes vs Ali, Hopkins vs Joe Smith Jr, I'm adding this to the list. I take no joy from watching an artist get destroyed for being old.

I think Holmes arguably had more left as he fought a prime Holyfield to a near standstill 4 years later. How do you think Mike Tyson would've done circa 2006-2007 vs Wlad Klitchsko? Not good, IMO. Or 2005 vs Vitali Klitchsko, because had he beaten Williams, Vitali may have been Tyson's next opponent. That massacre may have been worse than the one with Lewis. I can't see Tyson in 2005 or 2006 doing as well against any of the K2 brothers as Holmes did against Holyfield.

Not only wasn't he a spring chicken l believe he was about 6 months older than Tyson. That said, l very much admire the amount of punishment Tyson took as the easy thing to have done would have been to just quit. I also admire Lewis' game plan. I think that plan would have always caused Tyson trouble even in his prime.

Problems yes, but led to a one sided defeat of Tyson in his prime, not at all.
